Waking up, I clutch the sheets between my fingers. My cheeks heat from the morning sun shining through the windows.

“Ace, wake up, babe,” Jesse whispers. I slowly open my eyes, pulling him close and kissing his lips. I shiver, loving the way his morning stubble tickles my face. He pulls back and brushes my hair out of my eyes. “I just got word we’re shooting the last scene of the movie today. I’ll come back, babe,” he says, holding my cheeks between his hands.

“You fucking better, snowboard guy,” I tell him. He leans forward and kisses my stomach. He grins, walking backwards down the steps of the loft. I sit up and watch him gather his stuff, closing the door behind him. I stare at the empty space. Shit, he’s forgotten his beanie. I shrug on his comfy pants and slowly walk backwards down the steps.

He said I shouldn’t be using steps at all with me being knocked up. He got the finger for that. I giggle. After grabbing his beanie from the couch, I open the door, and the cool morning air sends a shiver down my spine.

He’s already sitting in his truck with the engine running. When our eyes meet, he kills the ignition and steps out of the car. He flashes me a crooked smirk. His gray eyes meet mine, and my heart skips a beat. “Did I forget something?” He grins.

“Me.” I fall into his arms and bury my face in his neck. “Ace, what’s the matter?” he asks soothingly, holding my face captive between his calloused fingers.

“You forgot your beanie,” I tell him.

He laughs, his chest vibrating. “I’ve got plenty more, babe,” he drawls. “Keep it.” He chuckles, pushing it over my head. He kisses the tip of my nose, then kneels in front of me and kisses my stomach.

“You are so beautiful,” he whispers and stands. He tilts my head back, and the moment our lips touch, I’m gone. His hands land on the base of my spine, pressing me against his waist. I groan and his zipper bulges, his erection digging into my stomach. His thumb traces the outline of my jaw. Kissing the comer of my lips, his tongue tangles with mine. Turning me so my back is pressed against the truck, he moans my name against my wet lips. The kiss is just like him, wild, unpredictable, and takes my breath away. I stare at him, wide eyed, my mouth slightly open, catching my breath.

“I’ll be back before you know it,” he promises.

“I know you will,” I say, letting go of his hand, and he hops in the truck, sliding the window down.

“Hang on a little longer, baby,” he says, looking at my belly and winking at me.

“You better come back to me, snowboard guy,” I drawl.

He grins, turning the car on again. “See ya later,” he says, giving me a two-finger wave before he drives away.

The next week, I spend most of my time behind my computer. After I finish packing a couple of new orders for my shop and dropping them off at the post office, I meet up with Angie for drinks downtown.

“Girl, I can’t believe you moved in,” she says, hugging me tight.

“I think snowboard guy took my sanity as well as my heart,” I say, taking a seat in the booth. I love the local coffee place. It’s this weird mix between speakeasy and old-time movie theater.

“Snowboard guys have a way to make us lose our minds.” She laughs. She frowns while she looks at me. “You okay? You look kind of pale.”

“I’ve had this dull ache in my back since this morning. Probably because I’ve been sitting all day,” I tell her, massaging my lower back. I grimace when my muscles start to ache even more.

“Are you still working on those new designs Layne brought home with him?” she asks.

“I need to keep my mind off things with him riding in unknown territory. Ronnie used to love to explore new areas where no one had ever been.”

Her smile is soft. “They know what to do. You have to trust him.”

A waitress comes by and hands Angie and me a mint tea, and she smiles at me, sitting back.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I ask, taking a sip from my tea.

“It’s… you never really used to talk about Ronnie like that,” she whispers, holding my hand.

“I didn’t?” I frown.

Letting go of my hand, she shakes her head. “Never. Layne didn’t either till Jesse came into your life.” Taking a sip from her drink, she says. “Jesse’s great. I’m really happy you found your match.”

“I love the son of a bitch,” I growl.

“We both love pains in the asses.” She grins.

I raise my mug in the air. “We do.”
