“I thought that was you, hon,” Angie says, walking out the front door.

I take off my helmet and fall into her arms, the stupid tears trying to spill over. She holds me tight, her small belly bumping into mine. Leaning back, she brushes my hair out of my face.

“How are you feeling?”

“Like crap,” I tell her.

She smiles. “I hear you,” she says, rubbing her stomach. “This kid only wants to eat pizza.”

My brother appears in the door opening. “Hey, kid,” he says. “Just saw the new designs. They look great.”

“She is not here to talk about work, Layne. This is a girls only day,” Angie bristles. He gives her a loving look, and she blushes.

I grin, taking Layne in my arms, kissing his cheek. He shakes his head, laughing. We follow my brother in, and I dump my helmet and jacket on the table in the hallway.

“I haven’t seen you at the office the last two weeks,” Layne says, walking into the living room.

I take a seat in one of the comfy chairs. “Been working from home. And been too busy wallowing, I guess.”

Angie heads into the kitchen, then walks back and hands me a smoothie, taking her seat next to me.

“How are you guys?” I ask.

She points a finger in my face. “Do not change the subject. We were talking about you.”

My brother snorts.

“What is there to say?” I shrug, taking a sip from my drink. “We had fun. It lasted longer than my previous track records. And I thought we had some freaking connection, but maybe I was wrong.”

She clutches my hand. “He sounded like a nice guy. You know I always have your back, but maybe he just had to focus on his runs.”

Layne chimes in. “Jesse is focused on the circuit. Many say he’s too hell-bent on being number one. The guy barely smiles, but the fans love him. We’ve sold more shit since he’s been repping our stuff than we did before.”

I bite on the inside of my cheek. “That’s great for the company, bro. Thanks for reminding me.” I laugh as Layne walks outside to light a cigarette. “I don’t know, Ange, after the X Games, we had this incredible night. The next day, he left to film some movie part in Japan, and then went to the Dew Tour on Copper Mountain in Colorado, and I never heard from him again.”

“Really? Not even a text?” Layne says from the porch, smoking his cigarette.

“He basically ghosted me,” I growl.

“You know guys can’t really balance work and a personal life,” Angie says, trying to lighten the mood. “I remember how busy,” she says, making air quotes, “Layne was when we first started dating.”

“I was scared, babe,” he chimes in.

“Busy.” I laugh. “He has been going to parties and God knows what.”

“So you’ve been in stalker mode?” Layne chuckles, closing the sliding door behind him, taking his seat next to Angie on the armrest.

Angie punches him in the shoulder. “Watch it, buddy, or else,” she warns.

“Or else what? No dessert for me?” He feigns surprise. Leaning forward, he kisses her on the lips.

“Guys.” I cringe. “Can you not?”

Layne sits back, crossing his arms. “Have you called him or anything?”

I shake my head, looking at the pictures of the Kurton family hanging on the walls. “What’s the point anyway?”

“Shoot him an email,” he says.
