“Yup.”

“Don’t forget about me, sweetie.” Precipitation blew a kiss.

Aurora squeaked again.

“Oh, that was for my gorgeous ginger moose.” Precipitation wagged a finger at Aurora. “Not you.”

“Huh.” Mack grunted.

Cary blushed.

Huck had been so caught up in watching the others that he hadn’t been paying attention to what Baus was doing. Baus was folding his hands together, over and over, faster and faster, and he suddenly reached out to grab Huck.

It happened so quickly that Huck didn’t have time to react, and he cried out in surprise when Baus’s hands went through his chest. It felt weird and tight, and he got choked up in such a way that he couldn’t speak. He didn’t understand what was happening, and he clawed at his chest, trying to push Baus away.

“Huck!” Grant cried. “Hey, hey! What’s he doing? Baus! Stop!”

Baus ignored him, and he continued to push inside Huck’s chest.

“Hey, what’s going on?” Precipitation demanded. “What is the fucking Thing doing to Huck?”

“Let go of him!” Rebecca snarled. “Right this very instant, or so help me—”

“He is giving him a very special gift,” Mrs. Charles explained. “Yours is coming. Please be patient. Now, about my bell…”

“Fuck your bell!” Precipitation barked. “What’s happening to Huck?”

Baus let go of Huck suddenly, and Huck fell to the floor as the room spun violently. He saw Baus step away and then turn toward Precipitation.

Huck couldn’t see what happened next, but he heard Precipitation scream.

Then Rebecca screamed.

What the fuck was happening?

“Grant?” Huck whispered.

“It’s okay, baby,” Grant said earnestly, dropping beside Huck and taking his hand. “Just hold on, okay? Just hang on. It’ll be over soon.” His eyes were bright with tears, and he smiled adoringly. He was clearly excited, and he squeezed Huck’s hand, swallowing back more tears as he said, “I love you.”

“Grant… I…” Huck gasped as he was suddenly blinded as he was swallowed up in darkness, and then…

No.

It waslight.

CHAPTER15

Grant

Grant had seen many incredible things in his life, but nothing beat Huck’s smile beneath a twinkling sea of stars.

Huck’s real, breathing smile.

Because yes, Huck wasalive.

And not just him, but Precipitation and Rebecca were as well.

There was no logical explanation for it. It was totally impossible and pretty insane to be honest, but when Huck sat up after receiving Baus’s gift, he was a living man once more—flesh and blood and alive and shouting for joy.
