I yawned again. “Urgh, fine. We drank, we got pissed, we fought, we fucked, we fought, he fucked off. Now go away and let me sleep.”

“Oh my God, you fucked him?” I winced as she screeched down the phone.

“Yeah, now please leave me alone to die in peace,” I begged her.

“Okay, sweetie, but you know, I’m thinking of coming home early, maybe even next week, so we need a girls’ night and a catch up.”

“Sure,” I murmured, rolling over onto my stomach to test whether or not my head would stay on my neck if I stood up. “I can fill you in on sleeping with one of my bodyguards too.” The noise she made after that remark was truly only really understandable by dogs. I said goodnight and put the phone down while she was still shrieking.

“You know it’s morning, right?” The amused male voice came from the door, and I turned my head to see Zayn standing there, holding a glass of fresh orange juice in one hand and a box of paracetamol in the other.

“She didn’t notice, and I fully intend on pretending it’s night and going back to sleep,” I muttered as I sat up and held out my hand for the drink.

He sank down on the side of the bed as I took the tablet and sipped the juice. My stomach felt like it had been thrown into a washing machine on a super spin, and I really wanted to be able to keep the headache tablets down long enough for them to work.

“So... bad night?” Zayn asked, grinning at me.

I leaned back against the pillows. “Did they tell you?”

“Most of it, yeah.”

“Good, can you tell me?” I closed my eyes.

“How much do you remember?” he queried, his voice serious. I opened my eyes to see if his face matched his voice and it did. Damn, I was probably in trouble again. Closing my eyes so I didn’t have to keep them open, I thought back.

“I met Jasper, my ex, in the bar. We went up to his room...”

“Did he drug you?”

My eyes flew open. “No, no, nothing like that. I’d had quite a lot to drink though. We… well, we... and then he left, and I followed him. We got outside and there was a commotion. I think someone had leaked where we were on social media, and suddenly we got mobbed. Jack told me to go round the back and meet them at a pub, so I did.”

“Where did the other guy come from then?” Zayn inquired.

“Jabari? He’d come to see me, saw me leave the hotel and followed me. He was defending me in the bar. There was a fight...” My voice trailed off as the memories started to get blurry. “Some drunk guy being a dick. Jabari hit him, and there was a snake...”

“A snake?”

“I don’t think it was real. Jabari couldn’t see it.”

“Okay, an imaginary snake,” he said. “Go on.”

“Then... there was just noise and people shouting, and I was so hungry... and then... oh, West got mad at me because...” I sat up, my head exploding in pain, my eyes wide. “Oh God, Zayn, I fed on one of the guys at the bar. I drank his blood. I didn’t mean to, I don’t know how, I just...”

“Shh...” Zayn gently pushed me back down on the bed. “It’s okay, we’ll sort it out.”

“But West... He was so mad, Zayn. I thought for a moment he might... do something. There was this look in his eyes.” I shivered and pulled the covers up over my bare arms. A thread caught on a gold cuff I wore on my wrist, and I looked up at Zayn. “Jabari. What happened to him?”

“West put him in a taxi and sent him home. He didn’t see anything we needed to worry about, but he wanted to make sure you got home safe. I think you have a loyal fan there.”

I groaned. “Like I need any more.” I looked up at him. “Can you hold West off? Like, lock him in a cupboard or something until I feel a bit stronger? Maybe three or four days? Weeks?”

Zayn smiled. “West is fine, he’s not going to yell at you.”

“He’s not? But I did something really awful.”

Zayn shook his head. “Someone drugged you. We couldn’t figure out whether it was your ex or someone at the bar, but you insisted it wasn’t Jasper. So we assume it was someone at the bar.”

“I wasn’t just drunk?” I asked, staring at him in horror.
