"That was amazing," Landon corrected. "I don’t think I’ve ever felt that drained after jerking off."

And she felt proud about that too! Even though she hadn't really done anything but follow his lead.

"Wow, I, um honestly didn’t expect that," she said, anxieties about what they’d done, about the things she’d said, already starting to creep in.

"I know, baby, I’m just that good," Landon answered. "I’m not even there and I’m giving you earth shattering orgasms you never knew you could have."

Katie rolled her eyes. "You’re not here, but your ego sure is taking up a whole lot of space in this room."

And just like that, he’d done it again. Came right in when she wasstarting to freak out and set everything right with one smart ass comment. She loved that about him.

Uh-oh.Not love, liked, she reminded herself.Love, romance, dating—none of those had any business lurking around here.

They chatted casually for another few minutes and said their goodbyes, then Katie did something she hadn’t done in a really, really long time. Even after the texts from Kyle and the phone call from her mother and her mini meltdown-slash-panic-attack, she finally fell asleep thinkingabout something other than her old life.

I made a mistake call me when you can talk

chapter 9

Imade a mistake? What the hell did that mean? What psycho would send someone a message like that with no explanation? And of course it came while Katie was driving with Ellis in the car so she couldn’t call or text back.

Her work day had started out with two pleading phone calls to Mr. Miller at LTD Printing and ended with a dressing down from Lori for dropping an entire box of Maverick souvenir mugs. Everything in between was a stressful blur and Katie had barely been holding it together when Ellis insisted they get dolled up and meet his husband Alex at one of their favorite bars.

The team was still in Los Angeles and Katie had the next two days off, so a night on the town seemed like a good distraction, but they’d barely made it out of the employee parking lot before Landon sent his ambiguous text message and threw a giant wrench in her plans to not think about him.

She drove home only half listening as Ellis rambled on about the "absolute torture" of trying to make everyone happy with the player portraits for the charity auction. What mistake could Landon possibly have made? The most obvious assumption was that he’d slipped up and said something to someone about what he and Katie had been up to. Or maybe he’d made a mistake by starting all of this with her. No doubt because he already had a girlfriend and now it was he who needed her to keep quiet. She agonized over both scenarios all the way up to her apartment where Ellis made a beeline for her closet.

"Oooh, I just have to have another look at some of these designer goodies you have. I’ve been dreaming about this Hermès handbag," he cooed, pulling the purse down from the top shelf and stroking it like a kitten.

Ironically, that bag cost almost a year’s worth of rent for her now. It had been a gift from her dad, not because she’d asked for it, but because her mother had told him to—and then she carried it around herself for the better part of a year. Katie had only saved it as an insurance policy in case she ever needed some extra cash.

Ellis held up two Alice + Olivia slip dresses, one a pale turquoise, the other black with a slightly higher neckline. "These are unbelievable. Why don’t you ever wear these, Kat?"

"Where am I going to wear cocktail dresses? Not to work. Those straps are like dental floss."

"How about the banquet? Either of these would be perfect."

"Oh sure, if I want Lori to fire me on the spot. She’ll probably accuse me of trying to pick up one of the players. And if she doesn’t, Anjali will surely bring it to her attention."

"Where did you wear them before?" he asked, holding the turquoise one up to himself in front of the floor length mirror.

"The black one I got as a perk from a stylist I helped out while I was doing that fashion internship I told you about in Atlanta. I’ve never worn it. That blue one, my ex picked out and insisted I wear to this country club mixer thing, and then he got mad because he said I was flaunting myself in front of his golf buddies."

"Ugh, Kyle? Obviously." Ellis said. "He was just jealous because I’m sure every guy in the room was drooling over you."

Katie had told him only bits and pieces about Kyle, but Ellis had been sweetly protective ever since despite not knowing even the half of it.

She rolled her eyes and brushed off his compliment. "Yeah, sure, El."

"I’m serious, Kat, I know a million girls that would kill for your figure, not to mention your closet. Don’t get me wrong, you always look super chic, but how come you never wear any of this high-end stuff?"

"I don’t know, the prices just make more sense for what you’re getting. That top I wore last week? That gray one you said you liked? Target."
