Ellis groaned and fell back on the bed in true dramatic fashion, an eight hundred dollar red top with the tags still on clutched in his hands.

"Kat, please don’t tell me you’re shopping at Target when you have Alexander McQueen in your closet." He hopped up off the bed to rifle through her hangers again. "You are at least going to wear something fabulous tonight. Moonshiners has the hottest guys in town—outside of the ball players of course. Girl, I have to admit, I’m looking forward to the boys coming back so we have something to look at that at least makes Lori’s abuse worth it. Remind me to tell Alex about what she said to you today. Heis going to flip. She has such nerve! Anjali loved it of course."

Ellis’ rambling reminded Katie she needed to call Landon before the game in LA started, unless she planned on spending her fun night out worrying about his "mistake."

"Hey El, I, um, I think I left my phone in the car. I’ll be right back."She made a show of patting her pockets that Ellis didn’t notice, too wrapped up in the wardrobe of her past.

She found a spot outside, under a tree, outof the purview of her apartment window, and slipped out her phone. Landon picked up on the first ring.

"Hey, beautiful."

"What’s up?" she asked in a completely unnecessary whisper, swatting at a fly circling her head.

"Not much," he answered, around a yawn. "Just about to head out to the field."

"What happened?" she asked, with a peek around the corner to ensure Ellis hadn’t followed.

"Last night? Eh, we lost. A hundred-and-sixty-two games, it happens."

"No, I mean, what happened? Your text? You said you made a mistake?"

Landon laughed as if that message had been some silly afterthought. "Oh yeah, I was wrong about the phone sex thing. It didn’t help. It only made it worse."

Katie groaned. "Are you serious? That’s what you meant by 'I made a mistake'? That pop up in the fourth, that was a mistake. You just can’t resist swinging at Braunfeld’s curve ball can you?"

"Ouch. You are one tough broad."

Broad? That didn’t sound sexy at all. Well good, maybe she should kick up the bitch act and really push him away. But how could she when he was the only high in her world? And it was a really high high. A smile had made it’s way onto her face even now. From halfway across the country, his carefree energy floated through the phone, putting that addictive huminside her.Or was that the stupid fly still buzzing around her ear?

"Well, that tag you made on Ortiz was borderline genius," she admitted, swatting the pest away.

"Coming from you? That’s the biggest compliment I’ve received all week. So what’s up?" he asked, switching gears. "What are you wearing right now?"

"Oh no, uh-uh, we’re not going there."

"Why not?"

"I’m standing in my parking lot, for one. Two, you need to be focusing on the game you’re about to play, and three, I need to go get ready."

"Ready? For what?"

"I’m going out, nosy."

"Out? What like on a date? Are you kidding me?"

"Not that it’s any of your concern, friend, but no, it’s not a date. I’m going out with my co-worker, Ellis, who happens to be married."

"Ellis is married?"

"Yes, his husband Alex is coming too."

"Ahhhh," Landon said, because husband made more sense than wife. "Where are you going?"

“I don’t know, someplace called Moonshiners?"

"Yeah, I know the place.” His tone was less than thrilled. "Lots of single dudes go there, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding a date if that’s what you’re looking for."

Jealousy dripped from his voice, surprising the hell out of Katie. Did he really like her that much? Did Landon Ryan really care that much? About her? This was too crazy. About as crazy, as the idea of adding any man to her life right now.
