Katie’s mouth opened and closed twice, but no words came out. Could she and Landon hold out for at least four more months, if not more? Could her sanity? Because this was huge for her career.
"What is wrong, Ms. Masterson? You seem, how you say… flustered," Mr. Takahashi observed.
Heck yeah, she was flustered. This was a huge decision, the type she usually fretted over for days, drawing up lists and charts. She could feel the beads of sweat forming around her hairline, but she blinked back at her superiors with the best smile she could pull out.
"I’m fine. I think maybe I’m in shock though. This is, wow, huge news for me. I’m so flattered but…"
"But what?" Mr. Takahashi asked, while Lori’s stare bored down on her like train headlights.
"I…I’m sorry, this is just surprising me and I’ve had a bit of a strange week, I guess you could say."
"Yes, Lori told me you were involved in an incident the other day involving Landon Ryan after he left game early. I could not find anything in the news. No details. What can you tell me?"
Takahashi’s eyes sparkled, the businessman gone, replaced by just another gossip hungry baseball fan. Just another person she had to disappoint.
"I'm sorry Mr. Takahashi, I’m really not at liberty to discuss anything from that night. Lori mentioned an NDA earlier. I signed one with Mr. Ryan’s lawyers and I take that as seriously as I would take any I’d sign with you."
Takahashi’s nose wrinkled, his brows dipping inward, but Katie couldn’t even fire up the energy to worry. She was just about ready to say "fuck it all" and walk out of the room. She wasn’t taking the new job and she couldn’t keep the one she had either. Her sanity couldn’t take months of sneaking around, and what about Landon? They’d just spent three days making plans over the phone. It wouldn’t be the best start to their new relationship to just chuck all those conversations out the window. Plus, he was on a three game hitting streak already…
Mr. Takahashi wasn’t insulted. In fact, his face broke into a smile and he looked over at Lori. "We are right about this one. How is she not taken already? I think maybe she is saved just for us."
His words punched Katie in the gut, knocking the wind out of her as surely as Kyle slamming her into that doorknob. Landon’s voice played in her head: "I know I’m not your first, baby, but that’s what it feels like. Like you were saved just for me."
She’d loved feeling that way, like Landon was the only man to ever share her bed. Her body. And when it had just been Landon and Kyle, that was something she could deal with. But now…she knew too much. She’d remembered too much about that night. There was a scar of shame on her she couldn’t seem to get past. Hell, she’d been naked in a bathtub with one of the hottest men on the planet and hadn’t been at all disappointed that he didn’t try to have sex with her.
Landon liked her being saved for him? How would he feel if he ever realized she wasn’t after all?
"Katie, if you’re on board, I’m going to schedule a meeting with HR and we’ll hash out the details," Lori said.
Katie looked back at her boss and took a deep inhale. "Thank you, Lori, Mr. Takahashi. I’m beyond flattered for the offer…and I’m so happy to accept the position."
