“A good father to his daughter, Nadia,” he said like he expected me to know.

“Daughter?” I mumbled. “Tristan has a daughter?” I sat up in my seat, still trying to digest what he’d just said.

“I thought he told … oh, he never did,” he muttered in realization and looked outside the window.

“Nadia is his daughter?” I asked, like I needed more convincing. I hadn’t expected it to be this. I’d expected a crazy ex or his first love.

“I’m sure he is not ready to talk about it,” Adrian said.

“What happened to her?”

“I’m sorry. I can’t tell you anything. You have to wait for Tristan to tell you himself.”

The whole waiting thing was starting to get annoying.

“Okay,” I mumbled, staring at my hands.

I didn’t know how long Tristan expected me to wait. I wanted to know what I was getting involved with.

“He cares about you, Chloe.”

“I know, but he won’t tell me anything. It makes me feel like a stranger.”

“You should know, this is a painful topic for him. You’re only going to push him away if you keep trying to force it out of him.”

I said nothing. He opened his mouth, as if he had more to say, but shut it and stared at me.

It was starting to make sense now—the way he’d interacted with little June and the sadness in his eyes when her mom had taken her away. I had so many questions, but I knew I couldn’t get the answers.

“How is Karen?” I asked, trying to keep the conversation going.

He told me about their plans for the wedding and how Karen was a minimalist. I pretended to enjoy the food even if the new revelation clawed at me, destroying me from inside while I faked a smile at Adrian.

We parted ways after eating and talking for hours. I took a deep breath when I entered the car.

“He has a daughter?” I whispered to myself, still allowing the information to sink in.

I felt a part of me falling apart. I began to question all our moments together.

I wished I’d never asked. Maybe it would have been better to stay in the dark. Now, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Was he still seeing his daughter or the mother of his child? Oh shit! This was too much to take in.

I decided to call Vina. I didn’t want to be close to Tristan with the different emotions I was feeling right now. I grabbed my phone and called her. She picked up on the first ring.

“Holà!”

“Are you home?” I asked.

“Si, are you coming? Please say yes.”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“Yes, Vina,” I said, and she screamed in excitement.

“Wait. You don’t sound excited. Is everything okay?”

“I will tell you everything when I get there,” I mumbled and ended the call.
