“Sure,” he replied, resting one hand on my hip.

“Did you hate me the first few weeks I was here? I didn’t get why you were always so mad at me.”

He sighed softly and stared at a spot on my throat. He was quiet for a few seconds before he met my eyes.

“I never hated you, Chloe. I was mad at myself, not you. I took everything away from you, and I couldn’t give it back to you, so I tried to stay away from you till I came up with a plan to fix the damage I had done, but you were everywhere. It was impossible to avoid you—to not notice the way you glared at me from across the table, how your eyes shone and your eyebrows elevated after you liked the taste of your wine, or how you would sing karaoke in your room while I was trying to sleep.”

My cheeks reddened in embarrassment, and I stifled a laugh. I hadn’t known he could hear me singing under my blanket while doing karaoke from my laptop.

“You annoyed the shit out of me. You were everything I hadn’t expected, and I only wanted to scare you away because you were starting to terrify me.”

“Really? You were scared of me?”

He traced my jawline. “Yes.”

“Was it because I ran after you with a knife?”

“No.” He laughed. “It was because I couldn’t stop paying attention to everything about you.”

I smiled and leaned down to kiss him softly on the lips.

“Neither could I,” I whispered against his lips.

Tristan sat at the island, watching me with an amused grin as I tried to make sushi.

“Call me if you need help,” he said as I struggled to mold the rice into the correct shape but kept failing miserably.

“I got this. You should be rooting for me,” I told him as he tried to suppress his laughter.

“You are doing great.” He clapped. “Is that what you want to hear?” he said and looked back at the laptop in front of him.

I glared at him and concentrated on the sushi in my hand.

A crash in the living room stole our attention. I abruptly dropped the rice to the floor and turned to see if Tristan had been hurt. Tristan was fine, but he, too, stared curiously behind him.

I assumed Karen had come to pay a visit. How generous. I hoped she’d brought a first aid kit.

“What was that?” I asked, dropping the spatula in my hand and replacing it with a frying pan.

“Wait here.” He gave me thatdon’t you dare go against melook.

I rolled my eyes and trailed behind him with the frying pan in my hand. One of the expensive ceramic vases in the living room was shattered on the floor.

“She is here,” I whispered behind him.

His head snapped back like he hadn’t noticed I was following him.

“I told you to stay in the kitchen,” he said.

“She won’t get away tonight.” My jaw clenched with determination.

I tried to walk past him, but he gripped my arm and pulled me back.

“Chloe,” he groaned.

“Like I will listen to you. We might as well do this together. Use your muscles. I got this to hit her big head.” I raised my weapon to demonstrate.

He chuckled and shook his head at me. “How are you sure it’s Karen? Maybe the vase just fell on its own.”
