I couldn’t bring myself to imagine what he had gone through, losing the love of his life and his daughter. The guilt was still in him.

“It was hard to heal from the pain. Knowing I was responsible for what happened to them, I couldn’t live with myself. The image of my baby girl bleeding beneath me and my lovely Fiona, lifeless in the bathtub, drove me crazy. I couldn’t escape it. That was how it all started—the nightmares, anger, depression, suicidal thoughts, and guilt. I wanted to end it all. I hated myself for everything that I did. I keep thinking of how Nadia would have been—her first steps, first words, and the woman she would have grown up to be. Fiona would have been …” He choked on his tears, unable to finish his sentence.

He squeezed into me as the sound of his crying increased.

“Maybe I deserve worse,” he cried.

“You’ll be okay,” I whispered, still stroking his hair.

So much pain for one person.

CHAPTER32

EXPOSED

We returned home after spending two weeks at the suite. Morris still had some time off, so we had the house to ourselves. The little time we had been away from psycho Karen was the best. It was like the whole world had disappeared for those two weeks, and it had just been us, getting lost in our feelings and learning new stuff about each other.

We had only been back for three hours, and I was already worried about Karen. Tristan had texted Adrian, informing him we were back from our mini vacation. I should have taken some time to plot a move against Karen. The only ones who would be greatly affected when the truth was out would be Adrian and Tristan.

I promised to make dinner tonight. Well, it was a dare from Tristan to see if hishard workhad paid off.

We went for a swim first. Goose bumps appeared on my skin as I entered the pool. The cool splash splintered my body like bullets. I missed the night we’d spent at the suite, talking in the bathtub while Tristan washed my hair. It had been warm and safe. Now, everything felt cold and unsafe.

We swam for a while and played around in the water before we decided to move to the Jacuzzi beside the pool for some warmth.

The heat from the Jacuzzi made me groan in content. We relaxed inside, drinking champagne and sharing stupid jokes we found funny.

“Okay, I got one.” I raised a finger after laughing at his joke.

“Hit me.” He smirked.

“So, there was this lady who was cheating on her husband every time he went to work. Here is what the husband did when he started noticing it.”

“What?”

“He would call her every day and ask her to turn on the blender to know if she was home.”

“What?” He laughed briefly.

“Stupid, right? Well, he decided to call their son one day, and he asked the boy, ‘Where is your mom?’ And he was like, ‘She left the house with the blender.’”

We both laughed out loud.

We stayed in the Jacuzzi for too long. Our fingers had begun to resemble prunes, and the heat was beginning to wear us out. The sun was starting to disappear below the earth’s horizon, leaving the sky with an array of oranges, pinks, and reds that scattered above us like a watercolor painting.

I crawled toward Tristan and climbed on him, straddling his thighs. He released a throaty groan as I moved my hips in circles. He wasted no time, pulling my bikini bottom aside and thrusting into me. My hips met every thrust with urgency as I held his soft gaze. He brushed his fingers against my hard nipples and nibbled on my neck. His other hand fisted in my hair.

Our bodies shook as we cried out in pleasure. His lips found mine, and I responded to his kiss. I smiled against his lips and withdrew from his face. My arms wrapped around his shoulders as I stared at the beautiful sky.

“You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Chloe Simpson,” he whispered, tucking my wet hair behind my ear.

“Well, you’re the opposite,” I said and pressed a kiss to the tip of his nose.

“Ouch, Chloe.” He winced, touching his chest, as if I’d just stabbed his heart with a dagger.

I laughed lightheartedly, and he smiled.

“Can I ask you something?” I said, holding his gaze.
