“Your eyes are really pretty. The clearest blue I have ever seen,” he whispered, and my cheeks heated.

“Thanks,” I mumbled.

“What if your family doesn’t take you back?” he asked, changing the tense atmosphere between us.

“I will get an apartment and try to build a life for myself. Maybe move to Paris. I have always wanted to live in Paris,” I said, smiling at the thought of it.

“I will miss you. You’re the light everyone needs once in a while,” he said, taking my hand.

I knew the day for Tristan to tell me the truth was drawing closer, and I’d be out of here. I should have stopped myself from getting attached, but it was impossible with Adrian. He stared at me with a softness I had never experienced.

“I want you to know you can stay here as long as you want if you’re having a hard time, getting a place. Tristan is cool with it.”

“Is he?” I scoffed, and he laughed.

“I will never forget when you ran after Tristan with a knife. I laugh every time I think about it. I wish I caught it on camera,” he said, his laugh so satisfying and adorable.

“Will Tristan be okay?” I asked.

He moved his gaze away from the ceiling to look at me. His eyes roamed my face before fixating on my eyes.

“He will be fine. He will get through this,” he whispered softly.

“Why am I here?” I wanted to know why Tristan needed me. Did he need my kidney?

“Only a few hours left for you to find out.” He winked.

“Why can’t you tell me?” I held back my urge to yell.

“’Cause it’s not my place to tell you.”

I groaned in frustration and looked away.

“I will be leaving.”

I didn’t spare him a look as he stood up from the bed. I closed my eyes as he moved to my side of the bed.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered. I felt his warm lips on my forehead.

I opened my eyes when I heard the door close.

Today wasthe day Tristan was supposed to tell me the truth. I hadn’t seen him all morning. I was nervous, and I didn’t know why.

I called Adrian, but he wasn’t answering any of my calls. I knew Tristan hadn’t left the house today, so he definitely should have been in his room. I decided I would wait for him to come to me first. I was ready to know the reason I was here.

I didn’t have classes today. I watched a movie, but I kept looking at the wall clock.

Does he even know it’s today? Should I go to him? What if he is still angry?

All these questions boggled my brain, almost giving me a migraine.

I stood up and left my room. I walked to the door to his room and raised my hand to knock but stopped. I paced in front of his room, thinking of how to tell him today was the day. I moved closer to the door again and brought my fist closer to the door, but I paused. Maybe I was being too pushy, but it was me who held the upper hand.

I sighed and walked back to my room. I called Adrian again, but he didn’t answer his phone. I screamed into the pillow and decided to take a nap. When I woke up, it was past seven in the evening. I tried Adrian again, but he didn’t answer.

I met Morris downstairs as he was finishing up dinner.

“Have you seen Tristan?” I asked, leaning on the countertop.
