“The food is probably getting cold. Shall we?” Tristan said, leading the way.

I walked behind Karen and Adrian, who had his arm around her waist. Jealousy ate me up, and my eyes drilled holes at where he touched her.

He pulled out a seat for her. I took the seat in front of them, and Tristan sat beside me. Morris started dishing out the food while my eyes were on Karen. She was beautiful, and her personality matched Adrian’s—the smile and sweet gesture they both embodied made them perfect for each other.

Adrian and Tristan talked about work and sports while Karen tried to make conversation with me. She laughed at her own jokes while I stared at her with a fake grin. I wasn’t good at faking my laugh.

She turned to Adrian and fed him a grilled shrimp; he fed her some strip steak with his fork. Tristan was too busy with his phone and food to care about anything. I sipped my wine, trying to drown the growing anger but it wasn’t working. I poured myself more wine and drank the whole contents.

“Are you okay?” Karen asked, staring at my empty wineglass.

“Yeah.” I smiled.

“Wow, your alcohol tolerance must be good.”

“You have no idea,” Tristan mumbled, still on his phone.

“I forgot something in the kitchen. I’ll be right back.” I stood up and left the garden.

I went to the yard and took a seat by the pool. I lay back on the long seat and took a deep breath. The cool breeze calmed me. I almost forgot about the lunch.

“Is this what you forgot in the kitchen?”

I jolted from the voice. Adrian gazed at my face with his brows creased in question.

I sat up, anger flowing like fireworks. He sipped the drink in his hand and took the other seat next to me.

“This is so comfy.” He leaned back on the sun lounger, propping one knee up while the other lay flat on the seat.

“Why are you here?” he asked, glancing at me.

“Just felt like staring at the pool.” I stood up to leave.

“Chloe,” he called, stopping me.

“Yeah?” I turned to look at him.

He finished his drink and gently put the glass on the floor. He sat up with his scrutinizing stare pointed at me. I never thought I’d ever want to feel enraged at Adrian. He had been my breath of fresh air ever since the incident, but now, even he felt so distant. He had been like a comfort I needed in all the chaos. The only person who didn’t make me feel so alone, but now, I wondered if it was all an act to keep me distracted from what his best friend had done.

“Come here.” He pointed to the spot next to him, patting it.

My eyes moved from his gaze to the pool, as I wished the pain would float away.

“Please,” he begged softly.

He grabbed my hand and pulled me to sit next to him. He kept staring at my face as I sat there.

“Your ears are cute. I have never seen you with your hair up.”

I didn’t say anything.

“Why aren’t you saying anything or looking at me?” he asked, sounding sad.

“What do you want me to say? Congrats?” I asked, staring at him.

Control yourself, girl. Save your dignity.

“You look damn cute when you’re angry,” he said with low laughter.
