I shot him a glare.

“What’s up with you?”

Are boys always this clueless?

“You didn’t have to follow me here, Adrian!” I snapped, standing up.

“I was worried, okay? You were acting weird.”

“Stop worrying about me. And don’t call me cute!”

“What are you talking about?”

He stood up, and I stepped back.

“Nothing. You should go back to Karen. We both know Tristan sucks at making conversation.”

“Is it Karen?” he asked, but I didn’t say anything. “It doesn’t change anything between us, Chloe. She’s my girlfriend, and you are … you are a great friend.”

There, he’d said it—the phrase I had been dreading.

I gave him one last look and stormed off with one question bouncing in my head. What the hell did I just do?

“Chloe, wait,” he said, but I didn’t stop.

Oh my God, I wanna lock myself in a coffin right now.

Tristan stood at the door, staring at me as I walked toward him. I wondered how long he had been standing there. He stepped aside for me to pass.

I ran into Karen on my way to the staircase, and she asked, “Have you seen Adrian?”

I pointed to the pool and made my way to the stairs.

“Is she okay?” I heard her ask.

“She’s drunk,” Tristan told her.

I walked into my room and slumped on my bed. “What did you just do, Chloe?”

CHAPTER17

FOREIGN

When I woke up, it was dark outside. I face-palmed myself when I recalled what I had done. I wouldn’t be leaving my room anytime soon. I’d totally embarrassed myself.

I shouldn’t have snapped; I should have pretended I was happy for him. I groaned and buried my face in the pillow. A cocktail of emotions pulled strings from all sides, but guilt galloped all over me. I had to avoid him until I came up with an excuse. I could tell him I was drunk. The door suddenly opened. I pretended to be asleep.

“I know you’re awake.”

I was relieved it was Tristan, but I didn’t move.

“Are you feeling better?”

I gave up and turned to look at him. “I’m fine.”

“Adrian told me you were feeling sick because you drank too much wine, which is weird because I have seen you finish a whole bottle with barely a buzz.”

“Yeah, my body didn’t like the wine.”
