“You wanna know why you’re here and why I did what I did in the church?” He sounded tired.

“Um …”

Was this the right time? Were we going to have a conversation with him half-naked?

“Well, if—”

“I will tell you,” he cut in.

I felt so uneasy. Why all of a sudden? I tried not to get too distracted, but how was that possible when I had a hot specimen who was half-naked in front of me?

“You’re here to help me create a dream,” he said after releasing a deep breath.

“Huh?”

CHAPTER19

PRESSURE

“That doesn’t make any sense,” I told him, trying not to laugh.

Was he trying to be funny?

“It’s simple,” he said, leaning back on the seat.

“Oh, is it? If it’s simple, you wouldn’t need me.”

“Your job right now is to listen. I will do all the talking.”

“What if I need to ask a question?”

“No questions.”

“That’s not fair. What if I don’t understand—”

“I will explain everything to you.”

“Okay, I’m listening.” I sat back, using my hands to support my weight.

He sat up, rubbing his chin with his thumb, like he was still contemplating telling me. I looked around the room as I waited for him to say something. I was surprised he had no paintings in his room since he was obsessed with them.

“First of all, I’m sorry I dragged you into this mess. You’ve been patient with me, and you deserve to know the truth.” He paused and looked down at the floor.

“I went through a rough patch a few years ago. I lost everything good in my life, and it made me shut everyone out. My mom believed getting married was the solution to bring light into my life and to help me move on. I wasn’t interested, but she wouldn’t stop pressuring me to go on with her plans for a better future. I agreed, desperate to escape her whining. I thought getting married to Sofia would help, maybe take away the worries and make her happy. I would do anything for my mom if it made her happy, so I was willing to enter a loveless marriage.” He stopped and sighed.

He still hadn’t looked at me.

“I felt nothing for Sofia. My mom had chosen her because she was a longtime family friend. She made us go on a few dates, even a romantic getaway, but all I wanted was to be far away from her. I convinced myself I could endure a union with her and not give her any attention, and then maybe she’d get tired and ask for a divorce.

“The morning of the wedding, I wanted to call it off, but I convinced myself again that I could do it. It was at the altar I realized I could never do it, and I had to stop it.”

He paused and stood up, running his hands up his face to the back of his neck, as if he was having an internal conflict with himself. He didn’t say anything for a minute and kept his back to me. He turned to look at me. He sat back in the seat.

“I know how crazy this might sound, and I want you to know, it was never my intention for things to turn out the way it did. I’m doing this for my mom,” he said with a pause.

There was an eerie feeling in the room. He didn’t look comfortable with telling me, and I was tired of waiting for an answer, so I didn’t stop him.

“With everything going on, you know the…the um…hospital and what happened at the wedding,” He scratched the back of his neck, looking anywhere else but at me.
