Remmie appears a moment later widening the circle around Areyna, Jason and Richard hot on his heels. “We need to get out of here.” Richard shouts over the screaming students around us.

I glance over everyone’s heads, searching for the quickest exit. There’s a classroom across the hall with an open door. “There!” I shout making everyone turn their heads to the room I’m pointing to. With all five of us pushing against the flow of students, we make it to the classroom in seconds. Areyna stays glued to my side as we spill out into the classroom.

Torren grabs the door handle but the cheerleader slips in just as he’s pulling it closed. “What the fuck Torren?” She screeches. “You said you’d keep me safe and now I’ve got a bruise on my arm.”

Areyna grabs my arm, drawing my attention to her. “She’s bleeding.” She hisses near my ear. Her voice sounds muffled and it’s not until I look down at her mouth that I realise why. Her fangs are protruding over her bottom lip, making it difficult to hide them. Remmie’s there in an instant, grabbing Areyna’s face and pressing it to his chest, hiding her from the stupid human’s view. With no other choice, I step in front of Areyna and Remmie, effectively blocking them from sight as the cheerleader continues to scream and shout at Torren. I’m not sure why he’s been protecting the human but there’s nothing we can do about it right now, not with the chaos out in the hallway trapping us all in this classroom.

“We need to get her out of here.” Remmie whisper shouts from behind me. I scan the classroom, searching for an escape. On the far side near the teacher’s desk is a window with no bars. It’s too small for the rest of us to get out but Areyna could fit through it no worries. I don’t want her out of my sight though. I bite my tongue and shake my head, “There’s no other way out besides the door.”

“Hang in there Areyna.” Remmie whispers, rubbing her back and arm. I want to hold her too but with the cheerleader in the room, I’m afraid of giving the humans more fodder for their rumour mill. Richard and Jason both ease themselves over so they too are blocking Areyna from view, but as Richard passes by me I notice his arm is nicked near his wrist. His blood scent is duller than the cheerleader’s but its enough to have Areyna surging forward. Torren, Remmie, and I all react at the same time. Torren grabbing Richard and pulling him away, while Remmie and I restrain Areyna.

She’s struggles against us.

“Jase get the cheerleader and Char out of here!” I snap as I struggle to hold Areyna’s legs.

“There’s still too many kids in the hall, we can’t even get the door open now.” Torren says as he tries to push the door.

In a blink I’m thrown back against a desk. Areyna standing over me. She snarls and shoves Remmie to the floor before lunging right at Richard. Almost in slow motion I see her fangs sink into his neck. The colour draining from his flesh as she drinks and drinks. I’m too shocked to move. The others all staring in horror as Richard stops struggling against her.

I finally begin to move but it’s like swimming through thick, muddy water. I’m not going to reach them in time. Why isn’t anyone else stopping her?

Richard’s heart beat sounds loud in my ears, but then there’s silence. A deafening silence that has my heart skipping a beat. Areyna stares in horror, blood dripping from her fangs. I reach for her but she’s gone in an instant, crashing through the glass of the nearest window and running across the football oval and into the woods, disappearing from sight before anyone can react.

My heart slows far too much but I need to keep the appearance of being human. Every drop she takes from me forces her body to take more. I knew my pure vampire blood was too strong for her to resist, yet I still ignored the open wound on my arm. The stupid cheerleader hasn’t stop screaming and it’s making it harder for me to concentrate on keeping my heart from beating. These fools need to believe I’m dead or they’ll never leave my girl alone.

The school hallway empties out, the silence that follows the emptying of the hallway is deafening. All I want to do is jump up and run after my girl, but I have to remain still. I need them to believe the worst of Areyna. I need them to believe I’m dead.

She’s my only hope of saving the rest of the pure bloods. The only chance we have of curing ourselves of the plague that has been killing us off slowly. With her full powers unlocked from my blood, she’s now the hope of the entire world.

I just hope these stupid fools will leave me here while they go running off after her. I’d rather not kill them all just yet.

The fools still have a use.

For now.
