I studied her smile and stared at her straight on. “Why would you say that?” I couldn’t imagine that I was going to be good for him in any way. It was going to be an intolerable situation that I was going to have to make sure I walked through carefully.

“You’re smart and seem to have common sense. Not like the rumors we heard about your sister.”

I bristled at the mention of Carina. I didn’t like what she was saying, but I tamped down my aggression and kept my mouth shut, even though I knew my eyes were blazing.

“I think if you do this right, you could be happy.” She didn’t flinch at my apparent disapproval of my sister being mentioned.

Her advice was unusual to me since my mother never got involved in the business side of things. But I had been around enough men in power to see when somebody had the ability to call the shots.

“So you pretty much have all the power to make decisions for the family, don’t you?”

Before she could answer, the door burst open and a handsome man charged into the room followed by the most gorgeous man I’d ever seen.

They both stopped short when they noticed Mrs. Romano sitting at her desk.

The gorgeous man made his way over to the other woman. “Sorry, Mother,” he apologized, giving his mother a kiss on the cheek.

That was when he turned his attention to me.

His eyes blazed as he took me in. “Why are you covered in blood? They should have put you into the infirmary to be looked at,” Luciano bellowed at me.

I shrugged. “This isn’t my blood. I’m fine.” I stood and waited for him to tell me what should happen next.

“Thank you for watching over her, Mother.” His graciousness to his mother was so out of the ordinary for most of the mafia men I’d known.

“Will you please come with me?” He motioned to the door and left the room not waiting for a response.

“It was lovely to meet you, Mrs. Romano.” I headed for the door without waiting for a reply and walked out the door feeling like a child that was being punished and needed an escort.

We walked back down to the infirmary again.

Tommy was still being worked on and was blissfully unconscious.

I trailed behind Luciano as he walked past those working on Tommy and into a back room where several men were sitting around discussing what had happened earlier.

The room descended into silence as we entered.

“Stefano, update me on what went wrong,” Luciano demanded.

The good looking man who walked into the office earlier with my fiancé stepped forward. “The lead car was attacked from both sides. It pinned in the car and they went to get out, but bullets started to hit them, Bria suggested they go out the back. They escaped into the other vehicle and only Tommy was wounded.”

“Were there any survivors from the other group?” Luciano’s voice got really quiet, and I was happy that I wasn’t on the receiving end of that tone.

“Three out of six are dead, and two escaped. One was losing too much blood so they couldn’t carry him with them. We scooped him up, he’s been stitched up to keep him from bleeding out until we could talk to him.” Stefano’s voice was succinct, bordering on abrupt. “The plates were stolen so we couldn’t trace the vehicles to the owners.”

“We’ve dispatched a few of our people to clean the street and find out if there were more people involved. None of the men got a good look at the driver or men that got away. They’ll find the car.”

“Thank you, Stefano.” Luciano nodded to his second in thanks for the update, and scanned the room to the other men. Then his attention fell on me.

“Now, follow me.” He led me to a private room before he turned all that cool rage toward me. “Tell me exactly what happened out there.”

CHAPTER4

Luciano

“Um, all right.”She eyed me warily as she leaned against the desk.

There wasn’t a trace of fear in her voice or on her face. Everyone was always afraid of me, but this slip of a woman wasn’t.
