“We got into the vehicles. There wasn’t any sign that we were being followed or cause for alarm. The other cars came at us from one of the weak points, but they didn’t disable our vehicle until the second car hit ours. Things got a little chaotic, but Nick nodded for me to get out the one door that would open. That was when shots were fired at us.” Her words were clipped as if she was reading off a report to her superior.

“There wasn’t a way out, so I suggested crawling out the back. Nick agreed and the others from the front seat climbed back with us. The other vehicle laid down cover fire, but Tommy took a bullet to the shoulder as we tried to get in the other vehicle. Shots were returned and a couple of their men were hit. That gave us a chance to get Tommy inside and let us drive away without incident.” Her cool facade made me believe she wasn’t fazed by this incident. I wasn’t expecting this in my future wife.

A knock sounded on the door before Stefano stuck his head in.

“You should hear what Nick has to say, Boss.”

Bria had shut up when Stefano entered the room, but gave Nick a tentative smile.

I watched them closely, but she wasn’t flirting with him. More as an encouraging nod but there wasn’t anything that seemed remotely sexual about her actions. If there were, it would have forced me to ensure that my soon-to-bride never attempted to take that road. She wouldn’t like the consequences and any man would be dead.

“Did you find the other vehicle?” Bria questioned as if she had the authority to demand an answer. She didn’t posture or make herself look taller. She leaned against the desk and voiced her command.

I watched her, trying to put the pieces of her together.

Stefano raised a brow at her tone with a glance at me.

“No, ma’am, we haven’t,” Nick answered respectfully, not hesitating.

I was curious why she would already command such respect from one of my men.

I glared at Nick. “What did you have to tell me?” There was a little more of an edge to my voice than normal.

“Sir, it was brought to my attention that you thought one of us was the reason that the other group was taken out. Bria made those shots, not one of us. She’s the reason that there weren’t more of us injured trying to get back here.” Nick stood at attention, waiting for me to speak.

I lifted my brow as I appraised my betrothed. She took my gaze head on. She didn’t flinch or cower. I didn’t think she had one meek bone in her body. To say I was shocked was an understatement. I hadn’t expected to hear that. Who the hell was I marrying? I’d sent them to protect this girl—where had she even gotten a gun.

“Bria,” I said aloud the name he’d mentioned. “Where on earth did you get a gun?”

I’d known it would be one of the twin girls, but I wasn’t sure which would be sent. I hadn’t seen them since they were young, about ten years ago, before puberty worked the magic that I was taking in now.

My future wife was beautiful. Her chocolate eyes had a fire in them that lit me aflame. She knew her way around a gun, and that was hotter than I could have imagined. But more importantly, she was no wilting flower. She wasn’t a puddle of hysteria in my arms. Which a part of me expected to be dealing with. After all, she was a don princess, they were catered to. Not this hard as stone woman whose thoughts I couldn’t get a read on.

“Yes, about that. Can I have my gun back now?” Bria asked me, sounding serious and almost angry.

If I didn’t have an audience, my eyes would’ve widened like saucers. “Your gun? You brought a weapon along to meet me?” I asked, a little surprised. Men twice her size didn’t dare speak to me with such frankness, let alone the unflinching eye contact she gave me.

“Yes, my gun. One that I just used to save the lives of your men.” Bria gestured to the room, and I let out a little chuckle. I’d never had a woman speak to me with such fire. This would be interesting.

This was a first. I should have probably responded differently, showed my authority in the situation, but this was entertainment I never expected.

I held out my hand to Nick, and he pulled a Sig Sauer 9mm from his back pocket. I took the gun and double checked that the magazine was empty as well as the bullet in the chamber. Nick gave me a handful of bullets. I did a quick count and put them in my pocket. She had only used three shots to take down the driver and the other two men.

Impressive, when all of my trained soldiers combined had only managed to hit one of the attackers.

I handed the gun back without the bullets and told her, “You can have the bullets back when I believe you won’t use them to shoot me.

She nodded and held onto the gun. She had nowhere to contain it while in her sundress.

“Search her luggage for other weapons,” I called out the door to Michael, the man who drove her escort vehicle today. His driving was something I had taken great pride in—he had helped our company evade many chases and shootouts. He was well trained, and she’d managed to outshoot him as well.

Stefano reported. “We’re looking at video footage now, but finding the vehicles won’t help much if they’ve been wiped down. That’s about all we can do unless we catch a break.”

“Leave us, but don’t go too far. I want any details as soon as they arrive.”

Stefano and Nick both nodded and closed the door behind them. Once we were alone again in the room, I really took in the girl before me. Not so much a girl, but more of a woman, really. Petite, but curvy in the way that it was evident she had worked to create and maintain her shape.

I’d prepared myself for the disappointment I would feel when I saw her. It would be easier to deal with the disappointment if I didn’t have my expectations too high. I wasn’t sure what I had expected, but she surpassed any and all expectations I had.
