I was pissed off that she jumped out into danger to take the guy out. So I was personally going to make this other motherfucker pay. Because I couldn’t punish her right now.

She watched me walk around the wall out of sight. I shot two quick bullets into his head and glanced back at her. I knew she could see that I was seething by the exhale she let out.

There was movement behind me from the abandoned police car. Bria shot, taking down another man with the gun in her hands. Again dead center between the eyes. She was a fucking marksman.

I turned my gun, ready to shoot again as I carefully scanned the area looking for other signs of trouble. So far no one came around and began to move toward our cars. The vehicles the shooters seemed to have come from were in the clear and no one else was being shot.

But we did need to go because there was a dead police officer on the ground next to my car.

We were unable to use the vehicle due to the tires being shot out. I made a few calls and Stefano and I grabbed our soldier who had been hit to move back toward the warehouse.

Carlos came running out having heard the gunshots from just down the street. He’d been waiting for them to die down before coming to help.

“Make sure that no one follows us this time.” I didn’t fault him, but someone was targeting my family.

I quickly called Al’s chop shop and told him what had happened. I needed to have the three cars cleared and moved immediately. Instead of using my guys who were on the other side of town, I thought this would be a great opportunity to see Al’s loyalty and capability. It would take too long for my crew to get this cleaned up.

“You’re to leave the dead bodies for our forensic man. He’ll collect them shortly.” This wasn’t what I’d had planned for today. “I’ll need to have the tires changed out on our vehicle and then returned to us as soon as possible.

“Isn’t there some way to find out who did this? Shouldn’t we keep the cars to figure out who is targeting us?” Bria suggested, not thinking clearly with all the adrenaline running through her body.

“We can’t have any evidence or DNA for the police to find, one of my men will take care of finding out who this was.” I took a deep calming breath and wrapped my hand around the back of her neck and pulled her forward to kiss her forehead. “Thankfully, this area isn’t one that has cameras in it, which is why the Montrellis family has their warehouse here. It’s a nice blind spot in one of the few areas of Chicago, so we can count on no one seeing or noticing the vehicles and bloodshed.”

Carlos allowed us to take his car, and we drove back to the house. Everyone was unhappy and coming down from the adrenaline but glad to be in one piece. Another reason to be thankful that this didn’t happen often.

I dialed up one of my sources at the police department just in case we’d missed something.

“Hi there, Zarellie. We had an incident over in the warehouse district.” My voice was cold.

“Yes, sir. What can I help you with?” Zarellie answered carefully.

“I’m going to need to have you clean up any video in and out of that area. Please make sure that all 911 calls are routed somewhere else for a short time. I’ll send you a message when it’s safe.”

I didn’t want anyone to hear what happened without hearing from me first, so I called my father.

“There’s been an incident, everyone’s fine. I’ll fill you in on the details as soon as we arrive.” I didn’t wait for questions from him but hung up the phone and pulled Bria into my arms.

Stefano drove straight to the garage building where Bria had originally gone with the wounded guard on the day we met. I’d hoped she wouldn’t ever have to visit here again under these circumstances.

Knowing she still had a gun, I actually wasn’t worried about it. Least of all, I wasn’t worried about her using it on me for the time being. She’d proven that she was on our side, and I was going to have to trust her at some point. It also helped watching her in action. I was fucking pissed, but at least I witnessed her in action and what a shot she was. I personally knew now she could take care of herself.

We were greeted with a stretcher, and I breathed a sigh of relief when she put the gun into the back waistband of her pants.

Everyone moved quickly as we had the wounded soldier and other bodyguards to be taken inside to be looked at.

I yanked Bria past all the chaos into one of the closed office interrogation rooms.

“Make sure we’re not disturbed and keep everyone the fuck out,” I commanded Stefano.

The door hadn’t fully shut when I rounded on her and started yelling at her.

“What the hell were you thinking? How could you get involved like that?”

“Oh, so I’m just supposed to stay tucked in and let you handle it? Is that it?” she argued. “No, thank you. I took care of it myself. I’m an asset and trained to be one.” Her eyes blazed at me.

“Yes, but you risked your life unnecessarily. We could have handled everything.”

“You didn’t, though, did you?” Each word that we shouted brought us closer and closer together until we were right in each other’s faces. Her right trigger finger stabbed into my chest.
