“The horses love me,” he said boldly.

“I’m sure they do. You smell like a barn.”

He handed her the computer bag and took a step back, putting space between the two of them so she could breathe again. “Get some rest. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Everly reached for the doorknob behind her but didn’t turn to go. “Good night.”

“Good night, Ev.” She’d have to leave first because he was rooted to this spot.

He waited as she stepped into her room and closed the door behind her. Alone in the hallway, he leaned against the door to his own room and closed his eyes. Being close to Everly was going to be difficult and amazing at the same time.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Everly

Everly handed the keys to Mr. Hanson. "You'll be in cabin five. Housekeeping will come by every day, unless you let us know that you don't want that service." She laid a map on the counter and drew a line from the check-in office to the cabins and circled number five. "This is where you're going."

A little boy no older than five giggled behind his parents as Remi taught him a hand slapping game.

"Remi is our children's activities coordinator." Everly laid two more sheets of paper on the counter. "Here is a list of the available activities. One is for children, and one is for adults. Just circle the ones you're interested in and bring it back here. There's a rodeo on Friday night that you won't want to miss."

Mrs. Hanson laid a hand on her chest. "There's a scavenger hunt tomorrow. Jenson will love that."

Everly drew a star beside the scavenger hunt listing and one other. "That and the relay race are always a hit, and even the little kids get to participate. Some things like archery are a little too tough for them at Jenson's age."

Mr. Hanson pocketed the map and activities list. "We were worried there wouldn't be enough things he'd be able to do."

"No need to worry," Everly said. "Remi is great with the kids, and she'll make sure he has a great time."

Mrs. Hanson held out a hand to Jenson. "Come on. Let's go see our cabin."

Jenson looked at Remi, then to his mom. "Can I come back and play with her?"

Remi stood from where she'd been crouching next to Jenson. "Don't worry. You'll get to spend plenty of time with me this week."

Jenson wrapped his arms around her legs and squeezed hard before releasing her and running out the door after his parents.

When the door closed behind the Hansons, Remi leaned against the counter. "Have I mentioned lately that I love my job?"

Everly's cheeks hurt from all the smiling. She’d woken up happier than she’d been in months. "Same."

Remi looked Everly up and down. "What's got you in a giddy mood? You get everything out of Doofus David's house?"

Everly held back a laugh at Remi's nickname for David. "I'm officially moved out. I gave his assistant the keys Wednesday night."

"Sorry I didn't get a chance to come help you move, but that's awesome that you made it out without more drama. He didn't come back?"

"Nope. I think he saw Ridge and Blake's trucks there and steered clear."

"For a stupid man, that was a smart decision."

Everly didn't care what had kept him away, but the longer she went without talking to him, the more thankful she was that she hadn't been made to face him again. It was over, and she was on the other side of the hardest part—moving out.

Remi propped on her elbows and leaned in. "What's it like living with the guys?"

Everly shrugged. "Uneventful so far."

Well, if she disregarded every time she crossed paths with Blake. Every look was charged, and even the little things he said were sweet and made her heart pound.
