Colt stepped closer, staring Remi down. "That you're a thief."

"That's harsh. I was cold, and I thought you'd want me to be warm when I brought in the horses this morning." Remi's look softened, and she tucked her shoulders in.

Blake whistled low. "She's got him wrapped around her finger."

"It's a good thing she only uses her powers on Colt," Everly whispered.

"Those two should just kiss and get it over with," Blake said.

Everly wasn't interested in Colt and Remi anymore. Her only thought was Blake. What would it be like to kisshim? If he kissed her half as adoringly as he looked at her, it might cause a short-circuit in her brain.

The room was quiet, and Everly turned back to the bickering friends. Her cheeks were growing warm after thinking about kissing Blake.

Colt was looking at Remi like he'd never seen her before. "You could have just asked," he said low.

"What would be the fun in that?" Remi asked, turning on her heel and smiling as she strutted out of the office.

Colt lifted the coat to his nose. "It smells like a woman now. It smells like Remi."

Blake slapped Colt on the shoulder. "Good luck with that, man."

Colt huffed and walked out.

Everly shouted after him, "Don't let her steal your heart next!"

Blake laughed. "Too late for that."

"I'm afraid so,” Everly agreed. “But I like watching him squirm. One day they’ll both realize they should just kiss and get it over with."

"Where's Stella?" Blake asked.

"Grabbing something for lunch."

Blake opened his mouth to speak, but Ava walked in, and he straightened. Maybe he’d just been about to say he was headed to lunch. Was he going to ask Everly to have lunch with him? They hadn’t eaten lunch together a lot, but he’d brought her a plate from the dining hall many times when there were a lot of check-ins around the middle of the day.

"Hey, I was hoping I would catch you," she said to Everly. "Hey, Blake."

"Hey." He tipped his hat and stepped to the side.

"Have you had lunch yet?" Ava asked Everly.

"Nope. I was going to grab something when Stella got back."

"Would you have lunch with me?” Ava asked. “I want to talk to you about something."

Everly glanced at Blake, who seemed interested in a metal horse statue on the shelf. If he’d been waiting to talk to her about lunch, the chance was gone now. “Sure.”

Stella walked in and waved. "I'm back!"

"I'm going to grab lunch with Ava. Call me if you need anything," Everly said.

Stella looked at Blake. "What are you doing here?"

It was the same question Everly had wanted to ask. Though he often dropped by the office just to catch up when he had a break, her hopes were high, and she wanted to believe he was here to ask her to have lunch with him.

"I'm waiting on a gravel truck. We're repaving the cabin pass today."

Stella looked him up and down as if she wasn't sure if she believed him. "Oh, well, you want a slice of pound cake?" she held out the foil wrapped blob she’d been carrying.
