“Someone’s having a bad day,” a deep voice says from the doorway to my office. Looking up, I see Garrick standing there, concern on his face over what he just witnessed. “Wanna talk about it?”

“I just spoke to Bitchifer.”

“What the hell did you do that for?”

“She sent back the divorce papers unsigned … again.”

“What’s her game?”

“Have a seat and I’ll fill you in.” Walking over to the bar in my office, I pour us each a stiff drink.

“If liquor is needed at eleven in the morning, she must have done something really bitchy.”

“You have no fucking idea.” Handing him his drink, I take a sip of mine and cherish the burn.

“So, what did she do now?”

“Apart from not signing the papers, she referred to the kids as ‘my spawn’ and wants me to die so she can get her grubby mitts on this.” I wave my hand around the room.

“No fucking way.”

“Yes fucking way.”

“That’s not possible, is it?”

“Fuck no. As soon as I realized she wasn’t coming back, I changed the will so that all my assets go to ‘the spawn’. She gets nothing.”

“Good.” He nods in agreement. “What are you going to do about the divorce then?”

“Chat with Stan and see what he thinks.”

“As much as we all love Stan, maybe you need to bring in the big guns.” I stare at him blankly. “Holly Miller.”

“Chase’s partner?”

“Yep.” He nods. “She works at some big law firm in New York. Cali was telling me all about it, she’s doing really well. Talk to her, there’s got to be something she can do, or at the very least, she’ll know someone who can represent you.”

Nodding, I take a sip of my drink and the combination of the booze and the thought of hiring a new lawyer eases my frustration from a few moments ago.

“I was watchingLaw and Orderwith Jayne the other week and I remember this one episode—”

“Garrick, this is real life not some crime show.”

“Hey, I’m just trying to tell you that it’s possible. Call Holly, if anyone can help it’d be her. Just don’t let Bitchifer worm her way back in.”

“Hell will freeze over before that happens.”

“Let’s hope that day never comes.”

Silently we sit here and sip on our drinks, then it hits me that Garrick is here in the middle of the workday. “As much as I appreciated the pep talk just now and your suggestion, what are you doing here?”

“Here to ask a favor.”

“Shoot?” Taking his glass from him, I top it up.

“Cali wants to do some practical placement, get some hands-on experience. I was hoping you’d let her help out here.”

“Are you just wanting her back here ‘cause you miss her? Or because you think my marketing team can assist her?”
