“Both,” he nonchalantly replies but I know him, he just wants his princess back here so I call him out on it, “I call bullshit.” And yep, he grins in that ‘busted’ kind of way. “But sure, I’ll reach out to Hannah and see if it’s something we can accommodate. How is Calliope doing?”

“Top of her class,” he proudly declares, “but did we expect anything less from my princess?”

“You ever gonna stop calling her Princess? She’s what, twenty-one now?”

“She’ll always be my princess. You can’t tell me that Finley won’t be your munchkin forever.”

“Touché.”

Hannah walks past my office door and I sing out to her. She enters and I run the possibility of Calliope doing some work here. She agrees to have her intern here. I let her know I’ll set it all up and get Calliope to be in touch. “I’m excited to see what Calliope can do for The Clifton. It might be time to bring in some young blood.”

“You know, you’re the only one to call her Calliope and get away with it.”

“Really? It’s her name, what else would I call her?”

“Cali, like most people.”

“I’m not most people,” I throw back at my best friend.

“Damn right you’re not, and thankfully there’s only one Kane-fucking-Heatherington, the world couldn’t handle two of you.”

“Fuck off, asshole,” I throw back at him, finally relaxed after my phone call with Bitchifer. “Now that your princess has an internship of sorts, get the fuck out of my office so I can get some work done.”

“Thanks for the scotch and helping Cali out, I really appreciate it.”

“Anytime, you know I’d do anything for you.”

He nods and exits my office. Throwing back the rest of my scotch, I grab Garrick’s glass and pop it on the tray to be washed. Bending down, I clean up the mess I made after my outburst earlier. Once my desk is back in order, I google the firm where Holly works. Grabbing my phone, I call her before I chicken out, and ten minutes later, I’m booking a flight to the Big Apple to see my new lawyer.

ChapterThree

“Daddy, I appreciate what you did arranging that with Mr. H and all that, but I’m not coming home for an internship that you arranged. I have repeatedly said, ‘I want to do this on my own.’”

“But—”

“No, Dad, no buts. You need to back off and let me do this on my own. I’m an adult now.”

“You’ll always be my princess.”

“And you’ll always be my dad but please, let me live my life how I want.”Even if it is slowly falling apart and I’m lying to everyone, but I’m Calliope Victoria Fischer, I will get through this. Come hell or high water, I will make it work.

“Fine,” he relents. “I’ll tell Kane you don’t want to come work for him.”

“Thank you. Please tell him I appreciate the offer but it’s not necessary … my dad was just interfering, again.”

We both laugh because Dad is the definition of overprotective, it’s one of the reasons I applied to FU. Being so far away, he couldn’t just ‘pop in’ to check on me. “I worry about you in the big city all on your own.”

“I’m not on my own, I have Nicole and recently, I met this cool chick, Chelsea, who’s dating a hockey player.”

“You’re not becoming one of those puck bunnies, are you?”

“Eeeeew, Dad, no. I don’t even like hockey. Sports and I don’t mix, you know that.”

“Good, keep it like that.”

“Dad, one day, I’m going to meet my Prince Charming and you’re going to have to accept that I’m a grown woman and will be having S-E-X to give you all the grandbabies you keep harping on about.”

“Not for another fifteen years, at least, and please don’t ever mention you and sex again.”
