KANE:The heart knows what it wants and mine wants you, Calliope Fischer. It beats only for you

Holy fucking swoon, Batman.

CALI:You sure know how to make a girl’s heart skip a beat

CALI:… and for what it’s worth, mine beats only for you too

CALI:Can’t wait to see you on the weekend

Staring at my phone, I wait for a reply but nothing comes. I start to wonder if I came on too strong but when I read back through our messages, he was the one to start the deep stuff. Shaking my head, I throw my phone into my bag, sit back, and stare out the window.

Why am I being so insecure? I’m not one to wait around by the phone. I wonder if it’s because it’shim, I’ve had a crush on Kane for as long as I can remember. This is a dream come fucking true and after this weekend, I will be sleeping with my crush. I feel like a giddy teenager again and I’m going to focus on that feeling. No more insecure Cali, falling in love Cali is the only version of Cali that is allowed.

My phone pings from within my bag but before I can answer, we pull up at my apartment. I pay the driver and he helps me with my carry-on bag and by help, I mean he gets it out of the trunk and throws it onto the sidewalk. “Asshole,” I mutter to myself as I pick it up and head inside.

Entering the apartment, I call out to Nicole but she doesn’t answer. “Welcome home, Cal,” I mumble as I head to my room. Exhaustion overtakes me and as soon as I lie down, I drift off to sleep.

I’m woken later when my phone rings. It’s muffled and it takes me a few moments to realize it’s still in my handbag. Pulling it out, I smile when I see it’s a FaceTime request from Kane. “Well, hello,” I sleepily say in greeting when I see his beautiful, bearded face on my screen.

“You didn’t text me back, I was worried.”

“Sorry, I conked out when I got home.”

“I thought I scared you off with what I said.”

An unladylike snort bursts free. “I was thinking the same thing.” He smiles at my revelation. “I’m normally so confident in a relationship but with us, I’m nervous and a little scared.”

“Why are you scared?”

“Kane, I’ve had a crush on you for years. It’s not often your crush becomes more. I’m scared that this is all a dream and then there’s also the fact that your best friend is my dad. What if us being an us ruins that?”

“What if us being an us brings us all closer together?”

“You really think that’s possible? You don’t think Daddy will kill you?”

“Well, I didn’t until you brought it up just now, but you know what?”

“What?”

“You are worth any wrath that may come our way, and no matter what, I’ll be by your side. Calliope, since running into you on the beach yesterday morning, I’ve been the happiest I’ve been in a very long time. This might be selfish but fuck everyone else. All that matters is you and me. This coming weekend, I’m going to make you the happiest woman ever. You and I both deserve it.”

“Are you real? This doesn’t happen in real life.”

“I’m very real and, Calliope …” He stares intently at me through the phone screen. “You and I are going to continue what we started in that room before your mom interrupted us. This time, no one is going to stop me from spanking your ass raw. Once it’s my favorite shade of pink, I’m going to devour you with my tongue and then I’m going to make sweet, sweet love to you.”

My eyes are wide as saucers as I process his words. My mouth opens and closes. “If you keep doing that with your mouth, Sunshine, I’ll have to fill it with my cock.”

“I’d be okay with that,” I whisper. “And I’m totally okay with the rest of your ideas too … I hope Nicole is out this weekend.”

He shakes his head. “Uh- uh, no interruptions and to make that happen, I’ve booked us a suite at The Plaza.”

“You remembered.”

“I remember everything you’ve said, Sunshine.”

This man is something else, I always knew he was amazing but seeing it firsthand, it’s something else entirely. He really is perfect. “I wish we weren’t so far apart.”

“I do too, Sunshine, and in a few short days, we will have a glorious long weekend together.”
