“I like the sound of that.” A yawn slips free. “Sorry.”

“I’ll let you get back to sleep, I just wanted to see your beautiful face before I went to sleep. Good night, Sunshine.”

“Good night, Kane.” He blows me a kiss and disconnects the call. Flopping back to the mattress, I stare at the ceiling, smiling. All the fears I had earlier have evaporated and now I’m excited for the weekend ahead. Why is Friday so far away?

Four days later,I’m back at work. I’ve just finished my set and am sitting in front of the mirror, I stare at my reflection and for the first time since starting at The Nirvana Lounge, I feel icky. “You’ve been requested in VIP 3,” Miss Rhi says, popping her head into the dressing room.

Turning to face her, I nod and smile but it’s fake. “You okay, hun?”

Widening my fake smile, I nod again. “Yeah, just tired.”

“Okay, well, why don’t you call it a night after this? It’s kind of slow for a Thursday.”

“You’re a gem, thank you.”

“You know I’d do anything for my girls.” Before I can say anything else, she sashays away.

Taking a deep breath, I grab a corset and quickly change for my last dance of the night. With my waist cinched where I can just breathe, I slip on my dressing gown, and make my way to VIP 3.

ChapterTwenty-Nine

I’ve flown in a day early to surprise My Sunshine. After checking into the hotel and dropping off my bags, I climb into a taxi and head to The Nirvana Lounge to see her. Exiting the taxi, I pay the cover charge and head inside. As I step over the threshold, my nervousness ramps up to Mach speed. As soon as I enter, Miss Rhi sees me and her face lights up like a Christmas tree. She waltzes over to greet me. “I knew I’d be seeing you again.” She leans in and air kisses my cheeks, just like the first time we met. “You hurt her and I hurt you,” she warns me and then smiles brightly and nods to the right. “Head on back to three. I’ll send Miss Sunshine in. She’s just finished her set.”

Reaching into my pocket, I pull out my wallet but she covers my hand and shakes her head. “Uh-uh, you don’t need to pay to see your girl.”

“You sure?”

“Positive,” she replies with a nod, “besides, this isn’t a brothel. I can’t be seen taking money from a paying customer who is going to bang one of my girls in one of my VIP rooms.”

“I never alluded to or said anything about banging.”

“Yeah, and Elvis ain’t dead. Just treat her right, that’s all I ask of you. I’m very protective of my girls.”

“I promise, I’m not going to hurt her.” I smile at the protectiveness from this woman for her ‘girls’ as she puts it. “From that statement, I can tell you really care about them.”

“What can I say, everyone loves me.” I laugh at her cockiness but it’s cocky in an endearing loving way. “Just remember my warning … Tiny over there …” She points behind me and when I turn around, I see an almost seven-foot monster of a man watching the room. He has muscles on muscles and with one punch, I’d be knocked out for a week. “He knows how to make it hurt. Any hurt you inflict will be returned tenfold.”

“Not planning on hurting her.”

“Good.” She taps my cheek, nods, and turns around, heading down the hallway that I presume leads to the dressing rooms. Nodding at Tiny on my way past, I make my way into the room to wait for Calliope.

While I sit here and wait, I realize that I’m not overly comfortable with her doing this, but do I have a right to tell her to quit? She’s only doing this because she had no other choice and while I understand the why, I don’t like it. At a time like this, I’d love to talk to my best friend about it but I can’t because my best friend is her father. Before I can stew on this further, “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails begins to play, the lights dim, and the door opens behind me. Without even turning around, I know it’s her. Miss Rhi assured me that she’d send her in, but there was a part of me wondering if she’d send someone else. Turning around, I notice that, just like last time, she’s staring at the floor. Her shoulders rise as if she’s taking a deep breath and when she lifts her head, she stares at me for a few beats before her face breaks out in a massive smile. “You’re here,” she coos.

“I’m here, Sunshine.”

We stand here, staring at one another and then suddenly, we’re both moving. When she’s in leaping distance, she does exactly that and launches herself through the air. I catch her and spin us around as she wraps her legs around my waist. We hold each other tightly as our lips slam together. Her tongue pushes into my mouth and in the middle of the private VIP room, we kiss our hello to one another.

Stepping backward, my legs hit the couch and I drop down. She’s straddling me but not once do our lips part. She pulls back and stares into my eyes. “You’re here.”

“We’ve established that.”

“But you’re not meant to be here ‘til tomorrow.”

“Surprise.”

“Best surprise ever, Kane.”
