“Kane, Finley, and Michael are joining us. We have dinner with them the first Friday of every month and tonight just so happens to be that night. Hope that’s okay?” Mom says, picking up the menu. I don’t know why she does because she gets the same thing every time we come here.

“She better get used to seeing Kane, he’s her boss now,” Dad states like I’m not aware who Kane is.

And more than that, I think to myself. “Yeah, it’s fine I was just asking, thought it was just a family thing.”

“Ohh,” Mom says, dropping her menu. “I never thought that you might want just a family thing, I’m sure we can cancel.”

“No, Mom,” I say, shaking my head, “it’s fine. Just got to get used to the swing of things and if I’d have known, I would have invited Fern too.”

“Next time, we’ll invite her. Just family for tonight,” Mom says.

“With the Heatheringtons.”

“Princess, they ARE pretty much family,” Dad offers, and I smile at that because maybe one day, our families will be combined.

Picking up my menu, I look it over when, suddenly, the hairs on the back of my neck prickle and my lip lifts into a smile. He’s here. Looking over my shoulder, I stifle the moan wanting to break free when I see Kane walking in with Finley. He looks divine tonight in jeans, a navy button-down, and blazer. My eyes unabashedly roam over him. He catches me watching him and smirks.

“Evening Fischers,” he drawls, slapping Dad on the back as a hello before he kisses Mom on the cheek, nods at Cari, and takes the seat next to me. “Calliope.”

“Kane,” I return, my eyes steadfastly locked on his. I swear the temperature in here just rose twenty billion degrees. He slips his hand onto my thigh under the table and squeezes. Smiling at him, I pick up my water. I need to keep my hands busy right now because I want to reach over and run my fingers through his beard, grip his cheeks, and slam my lips against his. It’s been far too long since I’ve kissed him.How the hell am I going to be able to work so closely with him and not jump his bones?

Thankfully, chatter starts and it gives me the opportunity to get my mind off the sexy as hell man sitting next to me. Dinner is going well. The food is amazing, as usual, and the conversation is flowing when my phone buzzes. Slipping it out of my dress pocket, I quickly open the message and read it.

KANE:The things I want to do to your delectable body. Did you wear that low-cut dress for my benefit?

CALI:I wasn’t even aware you were coming but know I always dress for you

KANE:Pink lingerie?

CALI:Of course. I wouldn’t wear any other color

KANE:When will I see you next?

CALI:**shrugging emoji**

“No texting at the dinner table, Princess,” Dad says, snapping my attention to his.

“Sorry, Daddy.”

“Sorry, Daddy,” Cari mimics from next to me. “You’re such a suck hole.”

“You’re just jealous that I’m Daddy’s favorite.”

“Are not,” she snaps. “Why did you have to move home?”

“Because I got a job,” I snarl back. “What’s it to you, anyway? Aren’t you and Finley going on a gap year soon?”

“Yes, we leave in six weeks, three days, and seventeen hours.”

“Excited much?”

“Like you wouldn’t fucking believe.”

“Language, Cari,” Dad berates her.

“Yeah, Cari, language,” I tease back.

“Cali, don’t sass your sister. You’re not too old for me to spank you,” Dad says.
