For a second, he considers ignoring it. His mind is racing about Fillan House—about Hannah. But then he answers.

Jordan stops in his tracks. He turns back to stare at Fillan House. One giant stone monstrosity of a group homeplusone medieval museum …

In the eyes of an imaginative and damaged girl, maybe it adds up to one grand, imposing castle.

A baron’s ancestral home.

“Holy shit,” he says.

CHAPTER 94

“Here comes your boyfriend,” Michaela said to me. She stood up quickly, grabbing her untouched breakfast tray. “I guess I’ll leave you guys alone.”

My heart gave a painful lurch in my chest. “Jordan’s obviously not my boyfriend.”

“Then why are you blushing?” she demanded. “And how’d you know who I was talking about? Maybe I meant Andy.” Michaela gave me a wicked grin. “Anyway, see you in group.”

“Don’t go,” I said, reaching out and catching her wrist. Her arm was so delicate it felt breakable. Her nails were thin and bumpy. “The last time I saw him I freaked out on him.”

She shrugged, removing herself from my grip. “Whatever, babe. I’m sure you two will work it out.”

“Eat your Corn Flakes!” I called after her. “Andyour banana!” She gave me a wave over her shoulder—another “whatever,” just wordless this time.

Jordan eased himself down in the chair she’d just left. His hair was extra tousled this morning; he looked rumpled and adorable. He yawned his way around a “hello.”

“Up late studying?” I asked.

“Something like that,” he said. “Did I chase Michaela off?”

“I think she just wants to not-eat in peace.”

He nodded, jiggling his legs under the table. He clearly had something to say to me, but I had something I wanted to say to him first.

“I think I went a little crazy on you yesterday,” I said. “And I’m really sorry.”

The tiniest of frowns appeared on Jordan’s smooth olive brow. “You shouldn’t say—”

“Pleasedon’t tell me I’m not supposed to use that word. I’ve reclaimed it, it’s mine, and you can’t take it away from me.” I held out half of my blueberry muffin. A peace offering. “Want some? If you find an actual blueberry, you win a prize.”

“I’m good, thanks,” Jordan said. He patted his stomach. “Full up on protein bars.”
