I let her hands drop and turned to the mess on the floor, dragging the debris to the center of the room with my boot. My eyes flicked to her shoes that sat neatly next to the mattress and then to her bare feet. She was just ballsy enough that I worried about her picking up one of the shards and doing something stupid, but I also didn’t want her to step on one by accident. I patted for my phone in my back pocket and hit the second speed dial.

“¿Bueno?” Luka’s voice was groggy.

“I need you down here. Bring the broom.” I hung up as he was mid-groan. Turning my attention back to Darya, I shoved the phone back into my pocket. “Let’s go.”

“I said I’m not going anywhere with you… Hey!” I bent and hauled her over my shoulder. Her legs kicked against me while her hands beat at my back. “Put me down!” She screamed.

I needed her out of the room long enough for Luka to clean it and I damn sure didn’t want to hold her or pin her against the wall. My veil of control was growing too thin to keep her pressed against me like that and I couldn’t afford to lose that control.

My only option was the torture chamber where I could shackle her to the chair. The further we got down the hallway, she must have realized the destination and her hands slowed against my back. Her body went rigid with a gasp but she didn’t protest.

She was brave. Too brave for her own good. I guess the showing yesterday hadn’t been enough.

Flopping her down on the chair in the middle of the room, I leaned in, hands on either side of her to cage her in. “The faster you make an enemy out of me, the quicker your life is in danger.” With her hands still bound, I looped the shackle through the rope that gnawed at her wrists, mentally reminding myself to remove those when we returned to her room.

Cell. She’s aprisoner.

She sucked in a quick breath before her eyes lit up again. “My life is already in danger.” The shackles clanked as she shook and kicked to get me away from her.

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

A laugh bubbled up from deep in her chest. “Says the one who murdered a man yesterday!”

“He deserved it,” I growled.

“Then so do I.”

I leaned forward until she drew back, desperately seeking space between us. “Some of my men believe so. All I have to do is say the word.”

Her face contorted. “Am I supposed to thank you?”

“You’re supposed to do as your told.” Even as I said it I knew it wasn’t true, Darya wasn’t born to listen and obey. It was her most arresting feature.

Something flickered in her eyes and she leaned forward. “I have another idea.” Her lips parted the closer she got until we were only separated by a whisper. My already hard cock jerked inside my pants as she batted her heavy lids. “I think you want me pliable, whimpering, and dying for your touch.”

Her words were like molten lava down my spine, stroking every inner thought I had dared to have about her since seeing her fucking picture. I did want her that way but also begging and flushed, pinned underneath my hips.

And she read me like an open book.

The tension between us snapped and I pushed away from her, gritting my jaw to try and get my body under control.

She laughed to herself before the smile faded and her eyes glossed over, a mask sliding over her beautiful face. “Just leave me alone,” she murmured.

I wanted to ask why, wanted to push back, but I needed to get a grip more. If Darya was seeing through me, how much longer until my brother did?You sound like you’re going soft.

I waited until Luka popped his head around the corner, nodding that the room was cleared before undoing the shackle and pulling her up. She didn’t put up a fight as I lead her back to her cell, the floor swept clean and even a little extra sparkly.

“We’ll try this again tomorrow, Darya.” And by that I meant, let the psychological warfare begin.

She made her way to the mattress and sat down, her eyes on the floor. When she didn’t flinch or make any attempt to respond, I plucked the knife I used to slit Eric’s throat, hoping that would rouse her fear. With a rip, the blade slashed through the rope at her wrist, and I inwardly cringed at the raw skin below. Without a word, I left.

But instead of bounding up the stairs, I waited with my back against the door. A sinking feeling weighed heavy in my gut. I wanted her fear, wanted her to maintain that terrified look I’d seen when I made a show of killing Eric. But her withdrawal made my chest tighten and as I palmed the bulge in my pants, I realized— nothing was sexier than her edge of defiance. That was the part of her that could bring me to my fucking knees.

Chapter 4

Darya

Nothing served as an accurate passage of time except the stomach pains that kept me awake. The grumbling in my belly was the only sound in the cell besides the hum of the air conditioner after kicking on and the slaps of my feet as I walked from wall to wall. Another day alternating between willing my body to sleep, forcing my eyes to stay closed underneath the near blinding fluorescent lights— and pacing around the room to try and tire myself out before switching back to the first option. There was nothing else to capture my attention, nothing to drag myself away from the reality that I was stuck between four concrete walls, in a way, waiting desperately for the next time my captors decided to pay a visit.
