“Your Highness…” Margo begins.

“Please can you postpone everything for today,” I say allowing for no confusion in my tone.

“Yes, Your Highness,” Margo says reluctantly. I can see her having an internal meltdown as she faces the nightmare of rescheduling my life for today. She’s Margo Henry, she’ll handle it.

Kayne is scoping out a children’s hospital I’m supposed to attend tomorrow. He does all the detail himself. As soon as he gets back I’m going to find him and just do normal things today.

I want to eat a greasy burger from a takeout place with him. I want to drink a milkshake from a food truck with him. I want to go for a ride on the Ferris wheel with him.

I just want us to be Kayne and Sophia today. I want to connect with him this way because I won’t be getting any answers from him. But something happened last night and it has to stop.

I’m hoping Igor can tell me more. If anyone can it’ll be Igor.

I can feel Kayne sinking into a darkness that’s not him. I want to protect him. I want him to know I’m here for him.

But more importantly, I want those answers. I want to know what’s stopping him from taking pleasure from my body. I’ve had a sense it’s a physical thing from the start. I need to find out what that thing is before I lose him forever.

No.

That will never happen. I refuse to lose him.

“Your Highness, if I may, I did get a call from Sweden last night.”

I’m surprised my heart doesn’t sink at the mention of Sweden. I’m not even afraid of Lindberg anymore. If he wants to live he’ll back off. If he doesn’t I’m sure Kayne can find a minute between a burger and the Ferris wheel.

I laugh out loud at that thought and both Rachelle and Margo look at me funnily.

“Sorry. Carry on.”

“Olaf Guntherson called the palace and asked for an audience with Your Highness.”

“Guntherson? Of Guntherson Mines?” Not only was Guntherson mines a privately owned enterprise, but they worked in tandem with not only the Swedish government but governments around the world.

I had hoped for help from the Fredericks mining company which is what Lindberg could have brought on board because Guntherson was out of the question based on our price range. Olaf Guntherson was the owner himself.

“Yes, Your Highness. Olaf Guntherson of Guntherson Mines. He mentioned that he and Mr. Langley go way back and he would be honored to meet Your Highness and help in whatever way he can with our mining endeavor.”

I laugh again and my heart bursts. He might not want the title of King, but Kayne has saved Strohamden and its Queen more times than I can count.

Margo has instructions to set up a meeting for next week. I excuse them both and go in search of my father. I plan to question both him and Igor. Any small bit of information will help me.

“Sophia,” he says as he hugs me. He glances at my attire but says nothing.

“We haven’t spoken alone in a while. Do you have a moment?”

He smiles and nods then leads me into his office.

“Dad, about Kayne…”

“I know there’s something going on between the two of you.”

I don’t deny it. I’ll take whatever scrap of information I can get if it means helping Kayne. So if my father is aware of it maybe he knows something else. It goes without saying my father would have seen Kayne’s bruised face this morning.

Even though Kayne is always with me when I’m in meetings or outside the palace, he still takes on tasks with my father but I think my father keeps him close only because he is intensely fond of Kayne. The only man he would truly trust he has said on several occasions.

I sigh deeply.

“There’s something… a rift between us that I don’t know how to heal. Ever since Roger Thompson, Kayne has not been the same.” My father listens.
