She turned, her intention to flee but bumped straight into Elliot’s chest. She stepped back. Horror filled her eyes as she looked at him and he looked at her.

On the screen, Tobias was still talking.

“You see. I wanted to humiliate you, but it appears your bride did that job for me. Let me tell you a story. That girl you married? She is not the Antonelli bride. She’s worthless. Her mother was the Don’s step-sister which made her daughter even more useless. Her father was some American scholar who couldn’t hold a gun. It’s her cousin, the real Anna Antonelli who is the real Antonelli bride.

“Now listen good, Elliot Knight. I’m going to find Anna Antonelli, it’s just a matter of time and then I’m going to marry the bitch, and then I’m going to slit her throat, take her riches and her power and I’m coming after you. You lose Elliot Knight. You stole the wrong fucking bride.”

“No. Anna,” Vivian cried, but Elliot had grabbed her hand and was dragging her out of the house. She almost stumbled and fell but he lifted her up and continued to pull her along.

“Elliot. Please I can’t let anything happen to my cousin. She’s nineteen and she doesn’t do well with strangers. Please, Elliot, I have to go to her before he finds her.

Elliot slammed her into the side of his car.

“Where is she?”

“No. I’m going to keep her safe. You have no use for me now. So you can let me go.”

“Where the fuck is she?”

“Why? So you can marry her instead. So you can be one up on him?”

Elliot looked ready to strangle her. Instead, he dropped his head and spoke calmly.

“Either my people find her or his do? What’s it going to be?”

Vivian broke down. She was giving her cousin away to the devil; it was just a matter of which one. Better the devil you know.

“Please don’t hurt her. She’s… she’ll spiral.”

“Where is she?”

“Pellington Square, apartment fifteen.”

Elliot opened the door and shoved her inside his car. With her tears falling like rivers down her face, she watched him speak on his cell as he rounded the car.

“Elliot, you have to believe me.”

“Not now,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.

This time she did worry he was going to crash them both.

With his hand around her arm, he dragged her back to his apartment. Once inside, he released her and she stood completely wrecked in the center of his living room.

“Talk.”

“I need to know Anna is safe. Please, she’s innocent in all this. I just want her to be safe, just until I can talk to her. Please, Elliot.”

Elliot glanced at his phone.

“She’s safe.”

Vivian whimpered in relief. She had to get back to Anna. She had to help her through whatever was going to happen to her now. She had failed her cousin.

“Now talk.”

“I… I was always the one who was going to take care of my cousin, Anna. It’s true what he said. My mother was the Don’s stepsister. My father was an English professor. When my mother asked the Don to release us from the family after my father died, he killed her. And I was held prisoner there. When the Don died, my Uncle Matteo managed to get the family to disband and then there were only three of us left. My cousin, Anna, my uncle Matteo and me.

For a year we tried to forget about the marriage contract the Don had signed with Cristo Kamaras. But my Uncle Matteo had learned through a Russian friend involved in the Bratva that once… Ariti married Anna; he was going to kill her because he didn’t have any more use for her. We believed he would do that. Everything I did was to protect my cousin.
