She smelled so fucking good, and I sneered—there was definitely arousal there.

I couldn’t promise I’d be gentle with her, I never was—a rough touch built from years of rage burning within me and never seemed to fade. The mingling of pleasure and pain was too good to deny me in the bedroom. But none left unsatisfied, and they all came to me willingly, leaving only after multiple orgasms and dripping in fluids.

Having a human body underneath me was the ultimate power. Earthly pleasures felt so fucking good—I’ve not found anything to replace them, not drugs nor violence. Nothing topped the feeling of someone trembling with bliss under me after being pushed to the edge of their tolerance, their pussy or ass pulsing around my cock as they came.

Fuck.

Tate pretended not to notice as I shifted, hiding my growing erection from him. He’d been with me from the early days, and getting hard while watching Cara certainly wasn’t the most compromising position he had caught me in. But he remained stoic and unreadable, which was fine. I hardly wanted to talk feelings with him. All I needed to know I learned from his work ethic. Tate came to me lost, wandering the streets, and betrayed, and I’d given him purpose, honed his skills and anger into a fine point that could be aimed where I needed him most. Trust was only built over time, and we’d taken down enough common enemies for him to be my number two.

We also shared a common hatred for demons.

But I’d never trust Tate completely.

I trusted no one that thoroughly.

He understood that, and I’m sure he felt the same. If it came down to him or me, I wouldn’t hesitate.

Tate’s scars told me a story I needn’t ask him about—a bonding between human and demon torn apart and how he had become who he was. I knew those scars, born from a severed bonding they were unique and recognizable. I knew what they meant, but I had never asked about his past, about the demon he had apparently once loved, much as he never asked about mine. Men like Tate and me, we didn’t talk about the darkest recesses of our pasts but moved forward, always forward. Each day that ended no longer mattered, and only the next one was important.

I’d deal with Cara later because when there was a knock on the door and Sven stepped in from the stairwell, I could tell by his face it was bad news.

There was business to be dealt with.

“I told you this would come back at you.”

Tate stared at me, judgment on his face. He had never liked Ray, and I didn’t blame him. When I hired her as part of my team to take care of some of my more violent warnings—messages to deliver via broken bones—I didn’t like her either. But she was strong, fast, and craved the security only I could offer. She was a lost demon looking for a path and the freedom to do her demon shit—fucking and fighting—without consequence. I offered her that, and she pounced on it.

But one night she took off, and I hadn’t seen her since. Although I had kept tabs on her, she’d be stupid to think she could leave my employ without consequence. She wasn’t worth my time then, but I knew one day I’d need her again and would need to know where to find her.

Tate had warned me then as he was reminding me now, that letting her go without punishment for her abandonment and her previous actions would come back and bite me in the ass.

And as one of my clubs—Darkside—on the south end went up in flames, Tate was convinced it was her, and Sven agreed, although he knew better than to speak his opinion in my presence. No one but Tate could get away with talking to me like that. Sometimes his condescending tone grated against me, but he didn’t do it often, and I knew it came from a place of loyalty. But in those times, I wished more than others I still had my wings and could unfurl them, let my eyes glow white, and show him what real power was.

Remind him that despite our working history, he should always be afraid of me.

More than once, I had considered taking him to the bedroom to remind him who was boss—he looked like a fighter.

“Do you still know where she is?” I asked, ignoring the meaningful looks the two were casting each other, their thoughts as clear as though I could read them—we should have killed her last time.

“Of course we do,” Sven grumbled.

Standing, I zipped up my hoodie. “So, let’s go get her.”

EMRICK

Tate came with me as I suspected he would. I figured he was hoping I’d allow him to kill her. Any chance to kill a demon, and he’d be thrilled, no doubt projecting the face of his ex-bonded partner onto them. But that wasn’t my intention, not tonight. I hadn’t even come armed with what I’d need to completely destroy her. Yet I had my strength, which should be enough to warn her.

Like a child, Tate practically pouted as I told him to wait outside the apartment building, and twisting the door handle, I shouldered my way into the foyer, the lock giving way. It was dark out, but I wouldn’t have cared if it were the middle of the day. Those who recognized me wouldn’t dare try to stop me, and those who didn’t, it would only take one look to make them back off. If they wouldn’t back off, well, I was looking for a patsy to take my frustration out on.

Stepping off the elevator, I strode toward her apartment door, placing my thumb over the peephole and knocking. My shoulders tensed when there was mumbling and giggling behind the door, my fingers clenching and unclenching. I could smell the bitch, fucking demons stink to angels, and the rage bubbled in my stomach at the memory of what she had done.

A year ago, I had let her shit go on longer than I should have because she wasn’t only targetingmybuildings, they were random attacks, and I assumed it was some kids being fuckheads and playing with fire, literally. But then Ray strolled straight through my front door, and everything fell into place.

Until one night, without a word, she left.

If she thought that would be the end of it, and I’d just give up and not keep tabs on her, she was mistaken. Typical arrogant fucking demon. She was nothing more than a time bomb, waiting on the sidelines until I needed her skills.

That was until she decided to start fucking with my business again.
