Christ, I couldn’t believe I’d just fucked her like an animal in some alley.

She’d been all there for it. At least, there was that.

“Baby,” I whispered, gently shaking her too-pale face. “Babe. Wake up. Come on. Babe.”

Nothing.

What did I do? What did I do now?

Go to Allstown.

That’s what Jake had said.Go to Allstown. They’ll know what to do.

Twilight had fallen while we’d been inside. I could drive through the dark. It would be better than the near blindness I’d experienced while traveling to the diner in the afternoon.

Rising, I sprinted to my crossover with Avery cradled against my chest. The door groaned as I yanked it open with more force than it liked. Carefully, I placed her in the passenger’s seat then raced around to my side of the SUV. I didn’t care if anyone saw me moving faster than I should humanly be able to. I wasn’t staying here anyway.

After starting the vehicle, I pulled out the new phone I’d bought this afternoon before going to the diner. Thankfully, the merchant for my carrier was right down the street from my wife’s workplace, which hadn’t eased the urgency to get to her that had eaten at me. I connected to the built-in Bluetooth in the SUV then yanked out into traffic.

“Fenway,” a rough voice rumbled over the line.

“Gar Fenway?”

“Who wants to know?”

“Jared St. Croix. Jake gave me your card. Told me to call you. I’m…” God this was weird. I couldn’t believe the words about to come out of my mouth. “I’m a new vampire. My wife worked for him, and he told me to come to Allstown.”

“Jake who?”

“What?”

“Jakewho?”

“I don’t know,” I exclaimed. “Jake from the Newrise Diner. He said he was your cousin. I don’t know his fucking last name.”

“Hey…cool it,” the guy grated. “I gotta be careful. Stop stressing out.”

“Well, Iamstressed out! Apparently, I’m a vampire. I drink blood, and I don’t even know where to get it, aside from biting people. And I bit my wife, and she’s…passed out, I guess.” I hoped that was all.

“She’s breathing?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, that will seem to change over the next few hours. Don’t freak the fuck out over it. Fill up your car and start driving here. If you’re in Chicago, that’s going to take you about eleven hours. Don’t stop unless you have to get gas, you understand me?”

“Yes.”

“You’re calling me from a cellphone?”

“Yeah.”

“Good, I’ll text you directions. Don’t go home first! Send me your address, the location of any storage, and the make, model and plate of any of your other vehicles. I’ll get my movers on it, so everything will be here for you.”

I glanced over at Avery. I’d do whatever was needed to ensure her safety. Apparently, I’d already messed that up, but I’d fix that. Somehow. “Okay. What’s going on with my wife. You said she’d stop breathing.”

“I said she’d seem to stop breathing. Like you, dude. You started her transformation. It will be permanent when she finishes it.”

“How does she finish it?”
