I prayed it wasn’t a praying mantis-like scenario.

“She has to bite you back. Just get here. And we’ll be able to teach you both everything you need to know. Oh wait… When did you last feed?”

“Less than an hour ago.”

“Okay, okay. You should be good to get here. We’ll have blood waiting. See you in eleven hours. Text me that info and call if you run into any problems on the way.”

I assured him I would then hung up. The gas tank was full, so I headed for the highway, ready to speed out of dodge. The directions from Gar popped onto my phone, and I thumbed over them, starting the route navigation.

Reaching over, I took Avery’s hand and willed her to stay with me. Even with Gar’s reassurance, I still feared what was to come. I’d never survive if she died, nor would I live if she left me, unwilling to tolerate or forgive what I’d done.

“I love you, Avery,” I whispered. “I love you. Stay with me. Please.”

Chapter Eight

~ Avery ~

I was in a moving vehicle. The rumble of the road beneath the wheels vibrated through me and seemed loud as a jet engine. The scent of cinnamon-spice told me Jared was nearby. His hand squeezed mine, and it didn’t seem as cold as before.

“Jared?” I whispered. My whole body seemed…heavy yet disconnected.

“Right here.”

“What’s going on?” I asked, struggling to sit up. Why the hell was I so weak?

I got the seat into upright position and looked around. It was night, though it wasn’t as dark as I’d suspect based on the hour showing on the dashboard’s digital clock. And everything seemed…so vivid. My throat ached with intense thirst. I grasped at it while I stared at the highway and trees. We weren’t in Chicago anymore.

“We’re almost there,” he told me. “Just hang on. Less than an hour. You’ve been…um, asleep…for most of the trip.”

“Almostwhere?Jared, what did you do?” Almost immediately the encounter in the alley returned to me. Then…

“You bit me!” I screeched, my hand going to my throat.

He winced. “I didn’t mean to.”

“You turned me into a vampire?” I ask-yelled.

“Sort of.”

“You don’t sort of turn someone into a monster, Jared St. Croix!”

I heard him swallow hard. “Gar said it’s not complete until you complete it.”

“Gar? Who the hell is Gar? What does that even mean?”

“Jake’s cousin. You know? From the card. Babe, I’m sorry. We were in the heat of the moment. I thought…”

“You thought what?” I asked while flames licked through me at the remembrance of that encounter. It had been the hottest damn sex ever. Right in line with what I’d always wanted. Since Jared had been turned every time was a fantasy come true. I liked him hot and demanding.

Being a blood-sucker, though? No. Just nope.

“I thought you were into it,” he told me.

“I won’t be finishing it.”

“Avery…”

I growled, matching his new favorite sound and cutting off whatever BS he was about to spew out. I knew he wanted to mention the chosen thing and being a monster mate and Gah! No. I just wanted my old life back! With the new sex.
