“Yep. She’s just Neffie now,” Lola said. “And kickass. She’s amaze balls.”

“Well, lookie here. I found the one I was looking for and two fresh one.” My head snapped up at the voice. No! How could he be here?

“What are you doing here? What do you want?” I asked, jumping up to face him. I wanted to shield my friends, but the way we’d sat made it impossible.

“You. I came foryou.A little magical tracker on that asshole vamp’s vehicle made it super easy to track you.” The green swung out his hand and Cara and Nicole flew backward, shimmering bands of energy binding them. Their heads had dropped forward on their necks while they hung limply against a tree.

“Now that they’re out of the way,” he said. He beckoned behind him, and four men came out of the woods. I’d never seen anything like them. Gray auras with red edges. Wait…I had once. They were like Mr. Johnson, but with far more red and gray.

“Hunters,” Allie whispered.

“Ding ding ding, give that chosen girl a prize. You two,” he pointed to his companions. “You take her. You guys take the other one. I’ll deal with the sassy one here. Where’s your vampire now, sweetheart?”

I screamed backing away, but it was too late. His energy bands lashed out, snapping around me and reeling me in until I was flush to his chest.

“Don’t worry, baby doll. I might throw the auction, so I win you. I’ll have so much fun breaking you in. Once that vampire stink is off you anyway.”

Jared! Help! Jared…Jared, please! Someone…they have us.

I struggled, trying to get free, but his hold was too strong, even with my newly emerging vampire strength.

What happened? Avery! What’s going on?I heard Jared’s panic even over the distance.

A green. That green…

The man in question through me over his shoulder and jogged toward the trees, following his companions. In this position…maybe, I could have gotten away, fought some more. But I had to be with Lola and Allie. There was no other way to save them. They didn’t have a connection to draw someone to them.

It’s not just me,I told Jared, taking advantage of this green not knowing I could communicate with my mate. They hurt Nicole and Cara and left them in the park. They took Lola and Allie, too.

Moments later, I heard the howls ripping through the night. The wolves knew and they were coming with Jared to save us.

We’re on our way,Jared vowed. And then…I’m killing him like I should have before.

Hurry,I begged.Please hurry!

Chapter Eleven

~ Jared ~

Five wolves and a magic wielder of some sort ran along with me as we dashed to save the women. Cara and Nicole had already shifted when we arrived at the park, their mates had nuzzled them quickly then we’d all taken off again. Neffie had joined Gar and I almost as soon as we’d started sprinting this way. She was the one who’d warded Allstown, and the dark fury on her face told me none of the intruders would survive her wrath. She flew along with us, her arms spread while she chanted incantations.

A thick fog fell over the woods before us. The inviting tree line thickened and twisted, turning into an impassible bramble.

“Jared,” Avery screamed.

It wasn’t in my head. We were close.

“Follow me,” Neffie commanded. The wall of vegetation opened for her, and we followed closely.

Suddenly, lightning flashed by me, sizzling across my shoulder. Neffie swore and twisted her hands as more bolts followed. These ricocheted off the barrier she’d hastily erected around us. She lifted her hands only to pull them back. I suspected she’d been about to retaliate but hadn’t because of the vulnerable women who’d been taken captive. I couldn’t see them. Maybe, she could.

“There are five,” she rasped. “I feel four humans. Hunters. And one magical. He’s not as powerful as me, but he’s crafty. My mates are approaching them from the other direction. They will distract the intruders, then we will attack.”

“Gar!” a woman’s voice screamed.

He bayed, howling in frustration. Even in his wolf form, I saw his anger rolling from him.

Almost immediately another voice started yelling for him. They were working together to lead us to where they were.
