“Jared!” Avery screamed, joining them.

They have us at a van. I don’t think they can get out right now. There are others.

Other men?I demanded.

Other chosen. Some are really young. None of them are even twenty, let alone twenty-one. The men intend to auction us all.

How many?

Seven. Seven and they’re just kids!

“They’ve got our women and seven other chosen,” I reported. “They’re planning to auction them.”

Gar’s low growl saidlike hell they will.

“Gar. Wait!” Neffie commanded. “This way.”

Yells and blasts filled the air, telling me Neffie’s mates had ambushed the kidnappers.

“Now,” she commanded. “Now, while they’re distracted. No mercy!” She threw back her head and yelled an ululation that surely would have made my blood run cold—if it ran—if she wasn’t on our side.

With no pause, she yelled incantations into the sky, a golden glow surrounding her body while she hung there in the air. Light green tendrils flooded from her fingertips and surged toward the battle. I raced in that direction. I had to find Avery. No one was taking her. She was mine!

I spotted the green the second I entered the clearing. Avery wasn’t with him.

Avery,I yelled in my head. What had he done with her?

We’re hiding behind the truck. Finish him!

Didn’t have to tell me twice. While the green tried to fend off Neffie’s attacks, I leapt onto him, flying onto his back. My arm wrapped around his neck, and I fisted my other hand into his hair. I brutally yanked his head to the side, so his panicked green eyes were forced to meet mine. My forearm squeezed into his windpipe, cutting off any incantation he might have spoken.

“You should have left it alone. You should have let her be,” I growled. “Now, you fucked up. Now, you die.”

I didn’t make the mistake of dialoging or even thinking. Leaning in, I let my vampire side take over, let it show me what it could do. My fangs dug into the soft flesh that vibrated with his trapped screams, and I ripped out his throat.

With no remorse, I jumped away and let him drop. Immediately, I turned to help with the others. All of the hunters were on the ground. Blood seeped into the ground while the werewolves howled their triumph.

Avery ran for me. With my shirt sleeve, I swiped away the green’s blood from my mouth just a moment before my wife launched herself into my arms. “Jared! Oh my God, Jared,” she cried, hugging me desperately.

“I’m here. I’m here. I’ve got you. I’m never letting you go.”

“No, you’re not.” Yanking back my collar, she sank her teeth into my neck where it met my shoulder. Ribbons of white light flew before my mind’s eye, binding us together forever. My knees buckled, and my arms went tight as iron bands around her while we clung to each other. Avery feasted on me, clinging and sucking as if someone might steal me away. No one was taking me. No one!

Mine. She’s mine.

On my knees, tilting my head for her, I held her to me and cradled her while she drank. My body reacted, the sexual energy throbbing through me with an insistence to take her. To feed on her. To make her mine once again. Staggering to my feet, I stumbled away from the scene, never letting her go.

“Don’t worry about us. We’ll take care of things,” Gar called, laughing. Apparently, he’d shifted back to human form. I hadn’t even noticed. All I cared about was my Avery. My Avery. My wife. My mate. My forever.

I didn’t stop until we were some distance away. Her back slammed into a wide tree trunk and only then did she pull back.

“You taste good,” she told me. Her green eyes shone with the power running through her now. My blood smeared on the corner of her mouth. She’d never looked more beautiful to me.

I leaned in and licked away the mark. “Not as good as you.”

“When new people come here…maybe we shouldn’t tell them this part,” she said, smoothing back my hair. “I’ll skip the kidnapping, hunters and evil magicals sections and just tell them you didn’t know you were a vampire until Gar told us all about monsters. That you didn’t know how to tell me so you ruffied me.”

“Not very heroic of me,” I commented.
