“Not what I mean. Just a lot of…what did you call them? Weirdos? And we just got another.”

I glanced up, seeing the man in the hoodie, ballcap and aviators. He grinned at me before slipping into a booth with no window. “Well…that one is my husband.”

Her stare whipped toward me. “What?”

“That’s my husband. Jared.”

She shook her head. “I didn’t know your husband was a vampire. But…you’re not.”

I took a step back. “No.”

Of course, I wasn’t. Was I still asleep, and this was all a dream? The whole world was insane today. Strange customers, Mr. Johnson’s odd goodbye, my friend obviously tripping on something, and my husband… I couldn’t even grasp all the anomalies in him. This couldn’t be real.

“Of course, I’m not. Neither is my husband. Are you okay?”

Her gaze turned sympathetic. “Did you notice his aura? I’m guessing it’s a recent change since it’s such a pretty sky blue.”

I swallowed hard, taking another step back.

“Babe, when’s your birthday?” she asked.

“In a couple days.”

“Oh…fudge. Monster bait,” she muttered.

“Uh, no, thank you. That’s a little personal. Just a cake is fine.”

Her brow furrowed. “You’re a chosen, aren’t you?”

“A what?” I couldn’t breathe, and my head was starting to spin. I glanced over at Jared, who glaring around at the other guys in the diner while they leered at me. My butt hit the stainless counter between the front and the grill area. “I don’t even know what you mean.”

“You see things,” she said gently. “You know things. And your husband’s aura is blue. Has it always been?”

“No,” I replied reluctantly. I couldn’t deny she was right about that, even as everything else in my world flipped upside down.

“And mine?”

“Orange…why?” Was she implying she wasn’t human? That none of these people were, including my husband? My hands clenched on the cool stainless, while I grappled with the need to flee. I had to get out of here and away from all these crazy people.

Growls erupted in the dining area.

“Jared,” I exclaimed. He’d leapt out of his seat and hunkered slightly, facing off with the green who’d asked me for the date earlier. “Jared, stop.”

“Yeah,” Green taunted, sing-songing. “Jared,sto-ooop.”

My husband growled. His mouth opened, and before my eyes, fangs popped out in his mouth. I staggered, while Leanne screamed, “Jake!”

His head poked up over the back counter, from the grill. “What? Oh fuck!”

He was around the counter in a flash.

“The vampire’s ours,” Leanne called.

The vampire’s ours?

“I need to get out of here,” I whispered.

Her hand clamped around my wrist, her warm grip like iron. “You’re not going anywhere. You’re not safe out there on your own. Not this close to your birthday. Someone could snatch you, and I have no doubt your husband would rip apart all of Chicago to get you back. We can’t have that.”
