Glancing over at my boss, Leanne, I nodded.

“Yeah,” I replied, the word sounding a little distracted even to my own ears. “Jared got home last night and…well, I didn’t get a lot of sleep. And it’s kind of weirdo central in here today.”

There were two guys with green auras, another man with a lavender purple and four that were silver. Whenever I saw anything other than white, my nerves went on edge. I didn’t know why. They were just people. People were people no matter their skin color or their auras, right?

“Hey,” one of the greens called, coming to one of the stools along my station and leaning across the counter on his elbows. “How about a date?”

For some reason, his tone implied what he had in mind was a lot more than that. My brow furrowed. I glanced at Leanne then back at him. I lifted my left hand for the guy to see. The ring didn’t seem to faze him.

“Married,” I said for good measure.

He scoffed. “Like that matters.”

“It matters to me.”

He rolled his eyes. “I’ll be back in a few days.”

“What the hell?” I muttered to Leanne after he walked away.

She shrugged, her orange aura shimmering around her. “Why don’t you let me do the rounds to those tables?” she offered.

“You don’t have to—”

“Please,” she interrupted and took the coffeepot from me. “It’s such a hardship to give up rolling silverware to you.”

“Well, when you put it that way.”

I watched her go for just a moment, musing that her orange aura didn’t bother me like other colored ones did. There seemed to be a whole rainbow here today. My nerves danced in my belly, my skin seeming to crawl in anticipation. Of what, I didn’t know, but the air seemed electric, readying for a storm. I feared I’d be in the middle of it.

Not that I’d seen it. I’d been blessedly blank of premonitions since the one about Jared.

Jared…

What was going on with him? The man who’d come home last night definitely wasn’t the man who’d left for Vegas. Which made no sense. Obviously, it was my Jared—my insatiable Jared, which was a big change. We’d always had a good sex life, but not like this.

Pushing away my worries, I focused on the rote of rolling the cutlery. Match up the set. Grab a napkin. Fold. Roll. Tuck. Repeat. It was mindless, but exactly what I needed. After I had a nice stack, I went back to check on Mr. Johnson.

“All set, honey,” he said and patted my hand. He eyed me speculatively, and for the first time, I saw the faintest tinge of red around his white aura. That was it. I was losing my mind. “Everything will be okay,” he told me.

“Alright,” I replied, a little confused.

“You’ll understand soon enough. Thank you for always being so kind to me. In return…” He glanced at the other men in the diner. “A little advice. Don’t let any of those yahoos get near you.”

“Oh,” I chuckled. “No worries. I’m married. Happily.”

“That doesn’t really matter,” he said cryptically, echoing what that green had told me.

“Mr. Johnson?”

He grinned. “You’ll be fine.”

Okay…

Confused, I watched him walk out, the bell trilling to announce his departure. This had been the weirdest day. I wasn’t even sure how to categorize any of it.

“Geez,” Leanne muttered behind me, having returned behind the counter when I went back to rolling silver for tomorrow. “Another one. It’s a regular zoo in here today.”

“It’s not that busy.”
