“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

“You know exactly what it means - you just don’t want to hear it yet. Don’t worry. Goddess Leto will help guide you to realizing your destiny,” I replied. Dean snorted, looking annoyed. Luke smiled at me, like he was humoring me. I didn’t care. I knew what the Goddess had in mind for those two, they just had a lot to deal with before coming to terms with it. I had to let them deal with it in their own way.

“Dean, the Goddess is guiding all of us. Just trust in her,” I said, waving away the stupid expressions on their faces.

“Sorry, but I don’t trust in anyone. It’s not a thing I do well,” Dean responded. I tilted my head, studying him closer. I could see what he said was true to him, but I knew he needed to trust in someone.

“Alright, well, do you trust in Amara?” I asked, challenging him. He hesitated, glancing over his shoulder at the room where we had left Amara laying. I knew he wanted to say no - he wanted to deny trusting in her, protecting her, and even liking her, but his wolf wouldn’t let him do it.

“Yes,” Dean finally growled out. I smiled, careful not to look smug and nodded.

“Then, follow her lead. She knows what she’s doing, even if she doesn’t know why,” I responded. I turned my attention to Luke. “Come on, we need to get the boundary back up. No telling who’s taking advantage of it being down and I, for one, don’t have the energy to deal with any more drama.”

Luke glanced at Dean, raising an eyebrow and doing that silent communication thing that wolves did. Dean scowled, but nodded, crossing his arms and looking away. I shook my head and walked to the front door, throwing it open and going outside - not bothering to wait for Luke. I didn’t technically need his help anyway. I could put this barrier back up by myself - I was a strong enough witch. He just needed the practice. He had learned a lot in the last few weeks, but practice was always necessary with this kind of magic.

Luke caught up with me quickly, shutting the door behind him, before falling into step by my side. We walked in silence to the edge of our town, passing several of the pack members. They ignored me and bowed their heads at Luke. I sighed when I noticed more than a few were circling my house. “You know Dean really fucked up, right? The pack is never going to accept him now.”

Luke sighed, eyeing the pack members who were around us. “Yeah, I know. They don’t really need to accept him though. He’s just here to protect Amara. As soon as we can get her back on her feet, he’ll be on his way back to the Kingdom. Hopefully, there won’t be any issues between then and now.” I stopped and planted a hand on my hip, raising an eyebrow at him.

“Don’t do that!”

“Don’t do what?”

“That look. It means you know something about the situation and everything I just said was complete bullshit because now, the exact opposite is going to happen,” Luke whined, running a hand down his face. My mouth dropped open, gapping at him.

“How do you know that?”

“Because it happens every damn time! Fucking hell, this is going to be an even bigger mess than I anticipated.”

“Good thing Dean can take care of himself,” I shrugged. Luke snorted.

“He’s definitely got the chops to take down anyone in the pack one-on-one, but if they gang up on him, he’ll have no chance. I’m going to have to babysit the bastard to make sure they don’t kill him.”

“Luke, has anyone ever told you that if you can’t control your pack, you’re not a very good Alpha?” I asked, eyeing him. He stopped feeling sorry for himself long enough to look down at me in shock and thinly veiled hurt. I smirked, turning on my heel. “There, my job is done.”

“What job?” Luke called after me.

“I got you out of your head and stopped you from feeling sorry for yourself.” I laughed as I walked away. I could hear Luke’s growl from behind me. I knew he was going to follow after me, eager to practice his own magic. We made it to the edge of the town and assumed identical positions, raising our arms above our heads.

The spell flowed from my lips in a familiar and comforting manner. The barrier started to raise as we made progress, securing the pack members inside and making sure all of the threats were kept out. I always loved this part of being in this pack - knowing that I had a dedicated and important job that helped keep everyone safe made me feel like I was a valuable part of this community. I knew the pack members weren’t completely sold on me being here - wolves rarely liked being around anyone other than themselves, but they had accepted me and what I was able to offer them. That was all I could ask for at the moment.

“Sam?” Luke called. I jerked, blinking and turning to face him while dropping my arms. He raised an eyebrow. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“What was that all about?”

“What do you mean?”

“You spaced out there. The barrier finished and you kept going - like you had no idea what was going on around you. Want to explain what’s going on?”

I sighed, running a hand through my hair and twisting it behind me. I needed to remember to trim it soon. The ends were dying and I was definitely ready for something new. “I was just thinking about my place here and how the pack treats me.”

Luke’s eyes flashed as his wolf pushed forward and a look of murder took of his face. He straightened, his posture becoming stiff. A primal part of my brain started screaming in terror as I watched my friend transform into a dangerous predator. I took a small step back, not quite sure what was happening.

“Luke?”

“How does the pack treat you?”
