“So, what’s the deal with you and Amara in the first place?” Jake asked, sitting down next to him. I stayed on my feet. My wolf needed me to be prepared for anything. We weren’t in the best place for safety at the moment.

“Nothing,” Dean grunted. I barked out a laugh. Dean glared up at me, but I rolled my eyes and smirked at him.

“You’re not fooling anyone. I know exactly what’s going on between you two - I’m going through it myself,” I said, folding my arms. Dean eyed me, then let a shaky laugh loose. I gave him a begruding grin, waiting for him to open up. Jake nudged his shoulder and Dean let out a desolate sigh, shaking his head.

“I have no idea what’s going on with me and Amara. My wolf claimed her as my mate, but I can’t. I can’t be her mate. It’s just not going to work between us, but I can’t stop myself from getting closer to her. I can’t stop my wolf from wanting to claim her every time he gets close to her. I need to stop this. I need to get her away from me until I can get over wanting to claim her,” Dean snarled, looking exasperated. I chuckled, shaking my head and putting my hands on my hips.

“You don’t get to choose this,” I said. Dean glared at me. I smirked, feeling amused.

“Why can’t I fucking choose it? Why can’t I choose who my mate is? I don’t want to be stuck with her for my entire fucking life,” Dean whined. Jake smirked, giving Dean a pointed look. Dean threw his hands up. “Fine! I can’t stop fucking thinking about her. I want her more than I want to take my next breath. I just don’t understand what’s going on. I wasn’t looking for a mate. I hated her - we’re always fucking arguing. She is the most infuriating person on the plate. What the fuck am I supposed to do about this?”

I gave him a warm smile. “You’re supposed to enjoy it. Take time to get to know who Amara is, beyond the preconceptions you placed on her and the arguments you guys have had. I know you were trying to start over with her earlier. Continue with that. Learn who you two are as friends and then you won’t be so opposed to having her be your mate.”

Dean blew out a breath. “Alright. I guess I can do that.”

I opened my mouth to tell him he didn’t really have a choice when a scream pierced the air. I froze, my wolf immediately going on alert. Another scream sounded, this one sounding like Sam. Dean and I met each other’s gaze and then shifted and took off toward the town. We slipped into the borders, veering around the pack members who were standing around, staring in the direction of Sam’s house.

My heart was in my throat. The screams from her home kept ringing in my ears.

Amara

Sam and I sat on the bed, letting the silence wrap around us. I was still a bit shaken up after the whole vision thing and Sam was recovering from pulling the pain away from me. She kept her eyes clenched shut. I sighed a little too loudly because she peaked one eye open, staring at me. I gave her a sheepish smile.

“Sorry, I’m just feeling a little freaked out about everything.”

Sam chuckled with an amused smile. She shifted on the bed, placing both of her hands on her knees and sitting up straight. I fixed my posture almost unconsciously, the muscles in my lower back protesting at being used for the first time in a long while.

“You have every right to be freaked out by everything. I remember when I first started feeling the pull of the Goddess. I had no idea what was going on and nobody to explain it to me,” Sam replied. A feeling of relief rushed through me with the knowledge that I wasn’t alone through this whole thing.

Sam gripped my wrists and pulled me to face her. I folded my legs, sitting crossed legged in front of her. She tightened her grip, staring intently into my eyes. Her dark brown eyes seemed to darken and swirl with what looked like the universe. I was mesmerized and then it felt like I was pulled in to another dimension. I couldn’t move, I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t even think about doing any of those things.

All of a sudden, I was dropped into a wide open field, with a dark and starry night gleaming above me. I sucked in a sudden breath, turning around in a circle, trying to get my bearings. A mountain appears and the sun starts to rise, ever so slowly. The sky lights up with beautiful reds and yellows, the sunbeams streaming from over the horizon and making everything the beautiful and cool morning. I was a bit surprised at the drastic change in landscape, but sighed in pleasure. I loved watching the sun rise.

“I know you do, Amara, that’s why I chose this as a place for us to meet,” A soft and mellow voice said, behind me. I whipped around and sucked in a sharp breath.

A woman with golden hair, a dark blue gown, and a gentle face was standing in front of me. She had a patient smile on her face, like she was waiting for me to catch up to where we were. I blinked, in awe of her beauty and grace.

“Amara, you’re going to need to catch up quickly. We don’t have much time together. Your and Sam’s magic can only hold you for so long.” She smiled and waved us in the direction of the mountain. She wrapped an arm through mine, pulling me close to her side.

“I-I don’t know what to say. What’s happening right now? I’m a little in awe, but you look gorgeous, by the way,” I rambled. I closed my eyes in embarrassment, hating the fact that I couldn’t stop myself from spewing out every thought that came to mind. The woman patted my hand softly, bringing tears immediately to my eyes. It reminded me of something a mother would do and I hadn’t seen mine in so long. She patted my hand again.

“Don’t worry, Amara. We’ll get to that part of your life soon, but you have some obstacles to get through before we can rectify that.”

I swallowed thickly, trying to clear the tears in my eyes. “I don’t understand.”

She gave me a tranquil smile, looking undisturbed about how I was taking this whole thing. She pulled us to a stop before the mountain base, placing her hands on my shoulders. The sky had grown brighter, the rising sun starting to burn off the cool temperatures and colors of the night. I glanced at the mountain, taking a deep breath.

“What am I supposed to do?”

“Trust your mate.”

“My mate?”

“My dear, if you question everything, we’re not going to have enough time to give you the answers you need,” She said. I bowed my head, properly chastised. I cleared my throat and she tucked a piece of my hair behind my ear, before tracing my jaw line with a light hand. I smiled up at her, still not quite sure what was going to happen.

“You need to understand who you are and where you come from. You need to know why I chose you to be my voice and what that means,” She said, gripping my hands. I raised an eyebrow.
