Dean

Something pushed me away from the wolf I was fighting. I lunged at him again, trying to get at his throat, but I wasn’t able to get any closer. I looked around and realized that everyone was dealing with the same thing - we were all prevented from fighting each other. I turned around, trying to figure out what was going on. When I noticed everyone was facing the same way, I moved that way and then froze.

My wolf immediately wanted to sprint forward, but I pulled him back and shifted. “Amara!” I called out and ran forward.

She turned toward me, smiling and looking completely calm. My heart was in my throat, as I tried to understand what was going on. I wrapped Amara up in my arms, squeezing her tightly into my chest and inhaling her scent. I closed my eyes, enjoying having her in my arms. I let out a shuddering breath, not wanting to let her go ever again.

“Dean, you’re going to need to let me go,” Amara said, her voice smothered by my shoulder. I let out a laugh that sounded just slightly unhinged. I eased back, staring directly into her eyes.

“I don’t have to do a damn fucking thing. You’ve been gone, Amara. I wasn’t able to find you. You have no idea how happy I am to have you back,” I squeezed Amara’s arms, my voice hoarse. She gave me a placating smile and I frowned down at her. I tilted my head, working on figuring out what was going on with her.

“What happened to you? Where did you go?” I asked. She looked over her shoulder, glancing at Jake. I frowned up at him and he shrugged, looking just as confused as I felt. She shrugged out of my embrace and reached for Jake. He moved forward, but stayed just out of reach from her touch. She dropped her hand with a smirk, shaking her head.

“I just wanted you both to hear, since I didn’t want to repeat my story. Jack kidnapped me,” She stated matter of factly, like it was something she did everyday. I frowned, a growl rumbling in my chest. Amara laughed, tilting her head back as she let the laugh take over.

“It’s not funny, Amara,” I ground out, the growl not really subsiding.

“I’m sorry. I know it’s not funny. It’s just that I’ve changed so much after what I’ve experienced. The only thing I can do is laugh right now,” Amara sighed. She reached for my hand, gripping it tightly. My wolf settled slightly, the growl cutting off. I sucked in a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves.

“How about we go to Sam’s house? We’re kind of standing in the middle of town with a bunch of angry wolves staring at us,” Amara suggested. Jake glanced over my shoulder, his jaw clenching and his eyes harding. I nodded, gripping Amara’s hand tighter and pulling her behind me. We sped walked toward the house, leaving all of the wolves behind us.

Before we went inside, Amara paused and turned back to all of the wolves that were still frozen exactly where we had left them. She eyed all of them closely, squinting at a few of them. She waved one of her arms over her head in an arc. I looked over at the wolves and watched as the rebels were pushed out of the barrier. My mouth dropped open and my head drew back. Amara smiled, sighed happily, and then walked in front of me into the house. I rubbed at my forehead, frowning as a headache was forming.

Jake shook his head and followed me into the house. The bedroom door was closed and a wave of guilt washed over me. I closed my eyes, rubbing at my temple. I hated the fact that we were here. I hated that Jack was still messing with our lives. I hated that Amara was having to deal with this. I just wanted us to go home.

“Alright, Amara, explain everything to us. We need answers,” Jake pressed. Amara shook her head and walked into the bedroom, standing in the doorway. Jake and I rushed to her, intent on making sure that Luke didn’t try to kill her.

“Amara,” Luke breathed. Amara moved further into the room and I took her place, with Jake standing just behind me. I took in the view of the bedroom, my eyes roaming over the broken lamps on the floor across from the bed, the dresser drawers that were broken on the ground, and the broken windows that had the soaked carpet in front of it.

I looked at Luke, noting the dark circles under his eyes and his pale face. His hair was sticking up at awkward angles and his clothes were ripped in a few places. He looked completely disheveled. I moved my gaze to Sam, who was laying lifeless on the bed. Her hair was splayed out around her, looking almost grey. Her lips were pale and she looked like she was wasting away.

“Don’t worry, Luke. You’ll have Sam back soon enough,” Amara said, resting a hand on his shoulder. My wolf raised his head, ready to get Amara’s hand away from him. I pushed my wolf back down because it was obvious that Luke needed a friend. I also knew that Amara didn’t have any intention of mating with him.

“W-what do you mean?” Luke asked. I moved into the bedroom, letting Jake be a part of what was happening. Amara smiled up at Luke and removed her hand. My wolf settled down, but was curious what was going to happen.

She moved to kneel by Sam’s side. She reached up, grabbed Luke’s hand, and yanked him down beside her. “Grab Sam’s hand. Think about all of the positive memories you have of you two together. Call her back to you.”

Luke looked confused, but he dutifully grabbed Sam’s hand and closed his eyes, muttering under his breath. Amara looked over at Jake and me, gesturing for Jake to kneel on the other side of the bed. “You do the same, Jake. Think about all of the good times. Focus on why you want her to come back.”

“But…she’s not dead yet,” Jake protested. I took a closer look at Sam and realized that her heart was still beating, however, it was so slow even my wolf hearing didn’t quite catch it. I gave him a quizzical look, wondering how he knew that when I didn’t even realize it. Amara scowled and snapped her fingers.

“We do not have time for this! If you do not do what I say, she will be dead. Now, sit your ass down and shut the fuck up!” Amara snapped. I blinked, taken aback by how commanding and confident she was being. Jake immediately sank to his knees and gripped Sam’s hand. Amara nodded and stood at the end of the bed, gripping Sam’s ankles. She closed her eyes and started muttering under her breath.

The room was silent for a good ten minutes, the only sounds coming from Amara’s muttered whispering. I couldn’t quite make out the words she was saying, but they had a rhythmic quality and made it seem like she was chanting. I stood near the door, barely able to breathe with how nervous I was.

After what felt like forever, Sam inhaled sharply, her eyes opening wide and sitting up straight in the bed. Luke and Jake both fell on their asses, looking up at Sam as if they were staring at a ghost. Amara released Sam’s ankles, stumbling back a few steps, looking exhausted.

I wrapped her up in my arms, just as she passed out.

Amara

Some time later, I opened my eyes, realizing I was laying on the bed again. I groaned, tired of passing out so many times. It was getting a bit annoying. I rubbed my eyes with the heels of my hand. I sighed and sat up, swinging my legs over the side of the bed and stood up. I threw the door open and stomped out.

“Amara! You’re awake,” Jake commented. I smirked, walked over to the little kitchen, and grabbed a plate and served myself up a large plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns. I sat down at the little table and sighed happily. I dug into the plate of food, chewing happily as the taste of food hit my tongue.
