“Honey, I would have loved to go on that getaway, but the truth is that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the wine tasting anyway.”

My forehead wrinkles. “But you love wine.”

She chuckles and shakes her head. “Carm, I’m pregnant.”

I hear the words, know their definition, but it takes me a moment to really let their full meaning sink in.

“You’re… pregnant? We’re going to have a baby?” Tears well in my eyes.

We’ve been trying unsuccessfully for a while. It wasn’t time to start panicking and I mean, we already had one child without intervention, but it was getting to the point that I was slightly concerned. Every month when Bella’s period arrived, I could see how hard she was trying to pretend it didn’t affect her. Truth be told, I was doing the same.

Bella nods with tears in her own eyes.

My hand rests gently on her still-flat belly. “How long have you known?”

“I took a test this morning after I threw up in the bushes in Central Park.”

I stifle a laugh. “Oh shit. Seriously?”

She nods. “I’ve been feeling nauseous for a few days, so after that, I took one of those early pregnancy tests. I did two of them, so I’m pretty certain, but I’ll make an appointment with the doctor first thing on Monday morning.”

I cup her face. “Baby, this is such great news. We’re going to have another child.” She smiles at me and I lean in to take her lips. “This is why you didn’t eat. Why you didn’t have any champagne.”

“Yep. And you should know that both Annie and Val were there, so they know.”

“Awesome. That means I get to go tell my brothers. Come on.” I take her hand and lead her back toward the ballroom.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea? It’s really early for this pregnancy.”

I stop us just outside the doors. “Everything is gonna be fine. I can feel it in my gut. And for the record, I’m gonna say now that it’s another boy.”

“Oh, you think so, do you?” Humor lights up her eyes.

“I do.” I kiss the tip of her nose.

“I suppose I would be destined to live in a home full of Carm mini-mes.”

I pull her flush against my chest. “What could be better?”

“I can’t think of a single thing.” She kisses me.

Any worries I had about losing earlier fade away. The fact is, I scored the jackpot when Bella agreed to spend her life with me. And there’s no greater prize than creating a life of our own.
