I pointed at the logs for the cell phones and computers of everyone who had access to Drake and his software. “Look at the time stamp on Olivia’s phone. There’s a five-minute gap with no activity.”

“Fuck,” Cole grunted. “You think someone hacked Liv’s phone?”

“She’s the weak link, and they knew it.” I shot up from the chair and headed toward the steel door. “We need to see Liv. There’s probably malware on her phone.”

“Drake has measures to block outside attacks.” He considered his words for a moment and then said, “But if they were able to kidnap Drake and Tate, I guess anything is possible.”

“Where were you at the time of the kidnapping?”

“In my office at Battle Industries on the phone with Grace.”

“Cell phone or work phone?”

Cole followed me outside the room. “My cell phone.”

“Do you have your work phone with you?”

He handed me his cell phone. I searched for any unusual apps running in the background. Nothing suspicious.

I gave the phone back to Cole. “It’s clean.”

“So you think Liv is the leak?”

“I do.”

“She wouldn’t have done it on purpose,” he said in her defense.

“I know.” Instead of heading toward the house, I cut through the backyard where Alex couldn’t see us. “But this is the only lead we have.”

ChapterSeven

MARCELLO

Ifloored the Maserati down Founders Way and headed toward the Battle Fortress. When Alex was pregnant with Sofia, our daughter kicked her every time I took a hard turn. She would punch my arm for every kick, and we would laugh about it.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake the feeling in the pit of my stomach. This mission was too risky. She was about to deliver the twins.

We built a life together, and I didn’t want to lose it. The same thought kept racing through my brain as I parked in front of the call box at Drake’s house.

The wrought iron gate rose above the redbud trees. Rosy pink flowers littered the long driveway. From beyond the gate, I couldn’t see more than trees.

I hit the button on the box.

“Hello,” a woman said with panic in her voice.

Olivia Maxwell.

“It’s Marcello Salvatore. Can you let me in?”

We’d previously met, but Luca usually spoke for our family. I preferred to blend into the background and go unnoticed. So I doubted she remembered meeting me. My brothers left more of an impression on people.

She hesitated for a moment, breathing into the speaker.

“Liv, it’s Cole.” He shifted his weight in the seat and leaned over me. “We need to come inside.”

“Oh, hey.” Another pause. “I’ll meet you out front.”

“No, stay inside until we get there. It might not be safe for you.”
