“I have just as much to lose. We can’t fail, so we won’t.”

I couldn’t guarantee anything.

My future wasn’t certain.

“Bastian will take care of Grace and Hale if anything happens to you.”

As we turned right, headed toward the ground-level access to what Alex called my spy shed, his head snapped to me. “I know he will. But… Fuck, I don’t even want to think about the what ifs.” His hand cupped my shoulder. “We got this.”

At the end of the corridor, I climbed the metal rungs, with Cole on the ladder behind me. I reached into my back pocket and grabbed the keys, turning the lock on the lid. Then I spun the wheel and pushed hard on the metal grate. The security door hit the cement floor.

I pulled myself up and into the room, leaning forward to extend my hand to Cole. He trained at York Military Academy and didn’t need my help. So he ignored my hand and climbed out of the tunnel.

We sat at a desk with a dozen monitors. I had feeds of every room in the house, including the backyard.

Alex was in the pool with Damian and Sofia. She pushed Sofia’s baby float across the pool with Damian at her side. It was nice seeing him acting like a normal person.

Like a father.

And husband.

I never thought he could change. But Damian was good to Alex and our daughter and would take care of them if I didn’t return. So would Luca and Bastian.

At least she had them.

I sat in front of the keyboard, typing the codes Cole provided, flipping between screens at Battle Industries.

“Wait, that’s Drake’s office.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “I thought his office was on the fiftieth floor.”

Cole shook his head. “That’s the office he uses for business meetings. His real office is on the fifty-first floor.” He pointed at the screen. “This is it.”

As I scanned the empty room, I noticed the wall of glass windows that looked like mirrors, shimmering when the light hit them just right. “What kind of glass is this?”

“Drake makes it at Battle Industries. One of his new inventions. It’s like the heat-strengthened glass they use on skyscrapers to withstand the pressure of strong winds but with a few modifications that make it impenetrable.”

“They attacked this floor. Someone knew about the tech on this level and how to get around it. Is the glass being manufactured and sold to customers?”

He shook his head. “No, not yet. It’s still in production.”

“Who has access to this floor?”

“Tate, Drake, and me.” He ran a hand across his tired face and yawned. “And Liv has access.”

Olivia Maxwell was the younger sister of Tate and Drake’s assistant at Battle Industries. They had been friends since high school and were like family to Drake. Although, his feelings for Olivia were not familial.

“Does Drake have other support staff on this floor?”

“No, just Liv.”

“Does she have access to his labs?”

“Yeah, of course. Sometimes, Liv has to go in there and wake him up when she gets in for the day. You know Drake. He’s a workaholic and never leaves the office.”

“Where is Liv right now?”

Cole leaned forward, the chair creaking beneath his weight. “At Drake’s house. She’s working at home while Drake is traveling.”
