“Afraid not.” Sonny groaned. “I left her at the safe house in Beacon Bay.”

“Cian Doyle is Declan’s enemy.” I glanced at my brothers and shook my head. “Why the fuck haven’t you handed her to him?”

Sonny was the nephew of an Irish Mob boss. Before his mother married into a founding family, she was one of the infamous O’Sheas. The Founders almost didn’t allow Sonny’s dad to marry her because of her connection to organized crime. But when you’re as powerful as the Cormacs, the rules don’t apply.

“Because I’m trying to figure out what she’s hiding,” Sonny said in his defense. “I’ll deal with the girl. Don’t worry about it.”

“Get rid of her,” I ordered. “Alex is ready to pop out the twins. We don’t need another crazy mob boss breathing down our backs.”

Alex wasn’t handling this pregnancy as well as the last one. With Sofia, she was fine up until the delivery. The postpartum depression made it harder for her to bond with her daughter. And with the twins, she was having a lot of panic attacks. Her anxiety was getting out of control. Some mornings, she woke up unable to breathe until she realized it was a dream.

The four of us tried to shield Alex from the truth. She knew Drake and some of the Knights had attempts on their lives. To ease her concern, we worked from home.

It had been more than six months since I went into Manhattan, the headquarters of Salvatore Global. Same with Bastian and Damian. They were running Atlantic Airlines from the home office they shared. It was like all of us were on house arrest.

God forbid Marcello even thought about leaving for a mission with Alpha Command. Alex would throw a fit and beg him to stay. We chalked it up to pregnancy hormones.

“I’ll handle it,” Sonny assured me. “It won’t blow back on any of you or the Knights.”

“It better not,” I said in a firm tone. “We’ll leave tonight.”

I ended the call.

Alex lowered the sundress over her head and fixed it over her baby bump. She looked beautiful, her skin tanned and glowing.

Standing in front of me, she bit the inside of her cheek. “Luca, should I be scared?”

“We’ll get Drake back.”

The words stung my tongue because they felt like a lie. I hated how much we had to conceal from Alex, but it was to keep her and the babies safe.

I hoped Drake could handle the interrogation long enough for us to rescue him. The Devil’s Knights had to undergo extensive training during initiation. We had to endure hours or sometimes even days of torture.

Not for the faint of heart.

I stroked Alex’s cheek with the pad of my thumb. “We’ll find Drake.”

She cocked an eyebrow at me. “Alive?”

I nodded. “That’s the goal.”

Alex smiled and grabbed each of our hands, ordering us to place them on her stomach. She ran her fingers over our skin as we stared at the water. “I wish we could stay here forever.”

“Me too,” we whispered in unison.

It was the truth.

If it were possible to live in Italy and never go back to Devil’s Creek, I would have jumped at the chance. Alex was calmer while on vacation. I hadn’t seen her look so at peace in a long time. The stress surrounding our family and the Knights was too much for her.

After one last look at the water, I drove toward Giovanni Angeli’s compound with the top down on the convertible. Alex sat beside me with her curls blowing in her face, a smile gracing her pretty pink lips. My brothers were in the backseat.

Why couldn’t we have gotten another hour with our wife before we had to return home?

Alex propped her elbow on the armrest, staring at me. “Are you okay?”

No.

“I’m fine. Just focused on driving.”
