Kavanagh looks offended while Mitch chuckles along with me, then he says, “I know someone. Come on, I’ll call him on the way.”

Now it’s my turn to look surprised. As we pass Kavanagh, I go to tell him to meet us at Maddox and Zak’s, but he speaks before me.

“I know where you’ll be, Roxy.”

“Of course, you do,” I say, rolling my eyes as I leave.

Outside, Mitch lets the paramedics know they aren’t needed, then we head off in Mitch’s car while he calls the doctor and arranges for him to meet us at home—at Maddox and Zak’s. It’s not my home, although it feels strangely right.

I brush the idea aside, not wanting to delve too deeply into why that is. Or why since being released I feel more like myself now than I have since I was a teen. A slew of images flash in my mind of the three of us hanging out, causing trouble and thriving on the adrenaline rushes of fights and the occasional police chase.

Some of the memories that are now forcing their way to the forefront of my mind are ones I had conveniently forgotten, but along with the happy memories comes the not so good. One night in particular now seems more important than ever before.

“Oh my god, did you see his face? I’ve never wished to have my camera with me so much before.” The Polaroid camera was a birthday gift from Maddox and Zak last year, and I’d usually have it with me but had left it behind tonight. After doing a job for Theo, the boys and I had decided to stop by the old, abandoned warehouse we sometimes hang out in with a few of the others from the estate. Bonner and Don were already there with a few others I didn’t really know and a couple of girls drinking and smoking.

From the looks of them, they’d been there for a while and were more than a little buzzed. We stayed and chatted for a bit, played a couple of games of cards for pennies. We called it a night at around midnight, but just as we were leaving a commotion over near the rear door caught our attention.

Don was there with one of the girls that had come with Bonner, and he was obviously trying to get in her knickers. I’ve no idea what he said but I didn’t miss the resounding crack as her hand met his cheek, or the words she spat at him.

“You filthy pig. Keep your hands to your-fucking-self You’re sick!”

She stormed off back to her friend leaving Don red faced and with a look of pure hatred in his eyes as he watched her walk away. The two girls left whispering to each other as they passed us.

“You sure know how to charm the ladies, Don,” I mocked with a laugh.

“What’s the matter, Rogers, she have trouble finding it?” Maddox called out.

“Yeah, we might tell you size doesn’t matter, but it really does.”

We followed the girls outside in fits of laughter and jumped in Maddox’s car. A gift from Theo, which seems to have become a regular thing lately. The first of which was the gun Theo gave Maddox a while back. In any other world it would seem like a strange gift, not where we come from.

Maddox offered the girls a lift home, which they accepted but I think it was only because I was there. Neither of them said much, and when I asked what Don had done, the girl shut down tight like a damn clam.

Now we are outside my block still laughing about the slap Don got and the look on his face. If it had been anyone else, I might have been worried, but it’s Don, or Rogers as everyone calls him, but although he’s a little strange and sometimes creepy, he’s harmless. His father on the other hand…yeah, totally different story.

After saying goodnight to the guys, I head inside and risk the lift tonight. There’s a chill and I’m too tired to take the stairs, plus it’s already here.

My head’s down as I enter, so I don’t see the guy standing with his hood up until the doors are closing behind me. Unease unfurls in my belly, but then I look a little closer and begin to recognise him.

“Don, is that you?” He raises his head, pushing his hood back, and I get a clear look at him. Relief floods me as my suspicion is confirmed, it’s Don. “Jesus, you scared the shit out of me. What are you doing here?” I ask, not understanding why he would be here.

“I came to see you, Roxanne,” he says, his voice gravelly with a sinister edge to it that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

“Me? Why would you come to see me?” I ask, attempting to keep my voice level and not show any fear. Besides, it’s Don, I don’t need to be worried.

He steps away from the corner of the lift as he begins speaking, “Well, you see,Roxy”—I take a step back, meeting the wall of the lift as Don invades my personal space—“I’d planned to fuck that little whore Bonner brought with him, at least one of them anyway, but she turned out to be a frigid bitch.” His nose scrunches, and his eyes turn almost black. I can’t help the little gasp that leaves me at his vulgar words. I’ve never heard him speak like that. “Now I have the small problem of my dick thinking it’s getting some pussy, so I need someone to help me out. What do you say, Roxy?”

I laugh because he’s got to be joking, right? My laughter is cut short as he reaches out and grabs my throat, slamming his other hand down on the wall of the lift, the metal makes an awful clanging sound right in my ear.

“Oh, you thought I was joking. Well, I’m not. Someone is going to help me out with these blue balls. I’ll even settle for a little cock sucking action, you know, if you’re sore from fucking Maddox and Zak.”

I try to pull away, disgusted with his words and his hands on me, and no wonder that girl slapped him, but he holds fast, his grip tightening enough to make me pause.

“Get your fucking hands off me!” I demand, but he doesn’t ease up at all.

“No, no, no, Roxy, this won’t do. How about Anastasia? Maybe we should see if she’s awake.”

“She’s 7 for fucks sake! You really are sick in the fucking head.” I ignore my stomach churning, and instead seize my opportunity to get away while he’s distracted for a moment when the lift comes to halt, and the doors open on my floor.
