Slamming my knee up into his bollocks, he lets out a roar, releasing me at the same time. Whilst he’s busy clutching his nuts, I land an uppercut to his nose. “You ever come near me or my sister again, and I’ll fucking kill you!” Shoving him aside, I run from the lift all the way to my door.

His voice carries down the silent walkway. “You’ll pay for this! I’ll get you and your sister, Roxanne Whitmore, just you fucking wait and see if I don’t.”

I hurry inside and shut the door, making sure to flip the latch and put the chain on too.

The blaring of a car horn and Mitch cursing at the car in front makes me jump and drags me back from my memories.

“Use your indicator, you bloody moron!” Mitch orders out of his wound down window, waving his hand in frustration. “You okay?” he asks, directing his question to me.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Arm is a bit sore, that’s all.” I flick my eyes to it to see that it’s started bleeding again and has soaked through the bandage.

“I know you better than that, Roxy,” he says, casting a glance my way.

“Then you know to give me some time. A lot has happened in the last few days.” I don’t need to elaborate because he knows I’m talking about him and the guys. But there is a much more pressing issue right now.

Don Rogers and how much he knows about who my sister is?

ChapterTwelve

Zak

It takes everything in me to turn and walk away from Rox. When you spend ten years working to get back to that person, your person, then when you do, you’re asked to leave them behind in a situation you know is dangerous it’s almost impossible.

I respect her, and despite having watched over her for last ten years, Maddox and I have very rarely had to intervene in her life to protect her. Partly due to Mitch but the rest is all her. She’s a force of fucking nature when she’s stirred to something she believes in or feels needs punishing.

That kiss was laced with so many promises. A promise of love—finally. But I felt her need for retribution tonight too. And a vengeance that will be cold and ruthless. Rox’s arrest seems to have broken that last thread of loyalty to her career and the police.

I don’t doubt she’ll harbour some emotional ties to the place and a few of the people, I’m guessing this guy, Smithy, is one of them, but everyone else will be shit out of luck and fair game when it comes to her now.

It’s been a while since I rode in a patrol car and never for good reasons. Smithy keeps throwing glances my way, while I keep turning to check on Star.

I still can’t believe she’s alive. All these years we’ve searched, Rox searched, and nothing. I’m not sure if her return right now is good or bad timing.

The silence is killing me. “Smithy, is it? You worked with Rox for long?” I know who he is, although it seems he’s not who we thought, but I couldn’t take the quiet any longer.

“Yeah, it’s Smithy. I think we can dispense with the introductions. I know who you are just as you do me, and we both know the young lady sitting in the back.”

“Okay, let’s lay our cards on the table then. Are you here because it’s Rox or is your role here down to someone else?”

He stops at a set of traffic lights, then turns toward me. “I’m not the enemy, Zak.” He sighs and drops his head a fraction. “I’m here for Rox, but she’s not the only reason. I know you’re concerned about my motives and why I would risk my career, but I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for those answers. For now, you just need to trust Rox and that means trusting me.”

“Zak, it’s okay, he’s one of the good ones,” Star says from the back seat, and I see the look shared between her and Smithy but decide to not comment.

As we turn down our road, I realise I don’t have a fob for the gate. It’s in Maddox’s car back at Kavanagh’s. Pulling out my phone, I call Maria, who I already let know we were coming. She answers on the third ring and manually opens the gates for us.

I called Maddox, but he didn’t answer, so I sent him a message to meet us at the house. I’m not worried, but I sent a message to Bowser too. It seems that searching for Rocky will have to take a back seat for the moment.

Once inside the house, Maria takes Star to the kitchen while I head to our office to check on security. The shuffle of feet behind me tells me that Smithy has followed me.

Dropping into the chair, I check all the cameras are positioned for maximum coverage and working. Even though I checked all the fobs already, I check them again.

The shooting at Rogue was bad enough, made worse by the fact that Rox was there, but the shooting at Kavanagh’s has made it clear that nowhere is safe. Even ours given what happened with the police and the fobs, but at least we’ll get plenty of warning of any incoming threat.

“You know if he decides to come for you, for Roxy, this house won’t protect you.”

I raise my head and pin him with my gaze, certain to let him see exactly how pissed his words make me.

“Top marks for pointing out the obvious, Smithy. Now let’s see how well you do with doing your actual job.”
