Chapter 20

Stormy

Ididn’t want to dothis. I’d have to relive that night, at least part of it.

“Can I have a drink?”

“Of course, my Queen. What can I get you?”

“Unless you have the makings for a pitcher of Snickers martinis, I’ll take tequila on the rocks. Teremana if you have it.”

“Damn, girl. You don’t mess around.” Doc chuckled.

“I hate beer and want to like wine. But frankly, it blows. That leaves me with girly drinks and the hard stuff.”

“I’ll get the prospects on the Snickers martini. I know we have Patrón.”

“I’ll take it. Silver or Reposado, if you have it.”

“If you tire of this guy's ugly mug and want to give a cop a chance. I’ll give you my personal number,” Stone said with a playful wink and a smile.

Gambit growled, which made me smile. I'm certain the detective is joking. I smiled at the detective as I registered his looks for the first time. Going by my height, I’d guess him to be five inches taller than me. That puts him at four inches over six feet. He had a cross between a swimmer and basketball players’ build.

He had dark, thick, wavy brown hair. The kind you wanted to run your fingers through. His thick brows didn’t overpower his masculine face and that mustache. It reminds me of the Marlboro man. Few men can pull off a full mustache. Detective Stone’s was well kept. His deep blue eyes sparkled with merriment, and perhaps a hint of mischief.

“I think I’ll keep this one.”

The tension eased out of my body while I studied the detective. Oh, he’s good. He took my mind off Ty. A shudder raced down my spine.

“Are you alright, bébé?

“Yes, no. I will be?”

“I’m right here. Ty will never lay a hand on you again. I text Ito to bring the Patrón and some chocolate.”

“Now I know why Nola looks at you so adoringly.”

Gambit smiled. “That’s my girl. After Mom died, I took my big brother's role seriously. Ask her about our tea parties.”

“You had tea parties with your little sister?”

“Too many to count.”

“You’re thirteen years older than she is. Right?”

He smiled, dropping a quick kiss on my lips. “Yes. I turned eighteen not long after Mom passed.”

“Will you tell me more later? After?”

Gambit kissed me again. Longer this time. Soft, sweet and full of love? Is it possible that he loves me already? That I love him already? My heart fluttered for the briefest of moments before it plummeted into a pit. He hadn’t seen all of me yet.

Gambit didn’t know about the scars. He just saw one of the unseen ones, but I have visible scars. Scars Ty put there. Soft lips brushed across my forehead. My eyes met his.
