As quickly as the quake came, it was gone. Replaced by an eerie silence and a halt to any and all movement of the mountain.

“Everyone okay?” Jude asked, and I realized he had been clutching my hand the whole time.

“I don’t know if we call this okay or not,” I said, opening the front of the robe, showing them that my chest, right between my breasts was glowing…gold.

The spot was cool to the touch, but inside me, I could feel its pulsing, soothing warmth radiate from the spot all the way through me.

“Soren?” Nico said, worry and anxiety lacing his tone. “You had an idea?”

We left the comfort of the bathroom and journeyed through the apartments before settling at the kitchen table. Nothing in our apartment had been ruined, and if you were to see it without knowing what happened the last few moments, no one would’ve guessed there was an earthquake at all. Soren went to fetch a pair of pants and then came back with them on, sans shirt.

“I had a theory brewing in my head but this morning cemented it all.” All of us leaned in to hear what he had to say. “The mountain began to act up in the journals when a rebellion started between the factions. That’s what is happening here, or I think. I think the mountain is not pleased with dragons being sectioned off into lesser and royal. After all, we are all dragons. Except forourdragon.”

They all turned to look at me, darting their gaze to my chest, not my breasts but the center of my chest.

“Why me?”

Soren continued while taking my hands in his. “You are the catalyst for change. A lesser, a golden dragon lesser, now mated to three royals. You have bucked against the lines that separate us. You are golden and lesser and royal now, all wrapped up in one. I think it means more than that.”

Just as Soren was about to explain, one of the High Council dragons busted into the front door, his breaths heaving in and out. Never, ever had I seen a royal run. It was comical but I kept my laughter to myself.

“Something has happened. You four are requested by the High Council.”

Chapter Twenty-One

Freya

We got dressed quickly and followed the man out the front door. But as soon as we exited, I gasped at the scene.

The mountain had crushed everything around us. Dragons and their mates were scattered all over, displaced from their homes and crying. Some of them with little ones clutching to their bodies.

As we passed, some of them looked to the ground as we passed. I was wearing the first dress I pulled off a hanger, which was a plum V-necked, strappy thing. The top edge of my new glowy chest showed at the top, but that wouldn’t give them reason not to look at me.

Soren took my hand as we walked through the place, stepping over rubble and rocks, meandering through the mess the mountain had made in her wake.

Nico took me by the waist and hefted me over several large boulders, and what would usually be a thirty-minute walk to the High Council chambers was now more like an hour just trying to get around the mess.

“Everyone’s homes were destroyed except for ours,” Jude whispered into my ear.

“I can see that,” I answered.

Inside the High Council room, well, the damned thing was split in two. It was as though the Earth had taken the room in its hands and cracked it in half.

The council members were all there and when we entered, they turned to see us. “Just as I suspected.” Volmir walked over to us and kept his eyes on my chest. “I knew this mating would be the end of us. A lesser of all things mating with one of us.”

Soren reached out with both hands and pushed Volmir from being too close to me. The walls in the room were still crumbling and a large rock tumbled down and crushed what was left of their large table that they used as a power stance to punish and rule over others.

“You think I caused this?” I asked, nailing the man with a stare.

“I think we should’ve been rid of the lessers a long time ago.”

Nico crossed his arms over his chest. “Except Freya was never a lesser to begin with.”

I whirled on my mate. “What?”

He smiled softly at me and pushed some of my golden hair behind my ear. “We always knew you were special, Freya, that’s why we chose you. But you’ve turned out to be the most special of all of us.”

Some of the other royal dragons had made their way into the council room and were surrounding us.
