As Ivan’s ever-shifting eyes darted up to his brother, his hands reappeared.
“Until we meet again, Marco,” Oleg said, rising to his feet.
Ivan abruptly pushed back from the table and stood up.
“Goodnight, Oleg, goodnight, Ivan.”
“Goodnight,” Ivan muttered, then both brothers turned and headed out the door.
Letting out a heavy breath, Marco dropped back into his chair.
His phone chimed.
It would be Benny.
“What the fuck was that about?” Benny exclaimed. “Why did Ivan lower his arms? Did he have a hidden weapon?”
“I find that hard to believe, but tell Joe to talk to whoever patted him down.”

As the long, sleek black limousine rolled out the gates and turned down the street, Ivan Zeppelin played with his switchblade.
“He lied about the girl. Fuck. He lied,” Ivan exclaimed angrily, skillfully flipping the sharp blade between his fingers.
“He didn’t lie,” Oleg retorted, “he just didn’t tell us he had the girl with him right away.”
“There’s something wrong, Oleg. I can feel it.”
“But it doesn’t matter. What is it the Americans say? We are driving the car?”
“We’re in the driver’s seat,” Ivan corrected him.
“Yes, we are in the driver’s seat,” Oleg repeated. “Girl, no girl, it doesn’t matter.”
“I don’t trust him.”
“Calm yourself. This will be over very soon, and you can take the girl.”

Marco seethed.
Was it possible Ivan had made it into the meeting room with a weapon?
Opening the drinks cabinet and pouring himself a scotch, he downed it in one gulp. As the liquor slid down his throat, and he tried to settle his nerves, Joe walked in.
“Rocco said the only weapon on Ivan was a switchblade. He gave it back to him when they left.”
Marco paused.
“They would’ve been stupid to try anything,” Marco muttered, “and Oleg isn’t a stupid man. Ivan though, I still don’t know what to make of him.”
“What happened, boss?” Joe asked. “Why did you think Ivan managed to get a weapon in?”
“Remember how Oleg was worried about Steph?”
“Sure.”
