“Uh… will you stay with me? I still feel shaky.”

He was about to refuse, but her sensuous smoky green eyes gazing up at him were making it difficult.

“Just hold me until I drift off,” she added softly, “please, Nick?”

“Okay, for a few minutes,” he replied, lifting his T-shirt over his head. “Put this on. I’ll be right back.”

As she raised her arm and lifted it from his hand, the bedspread slipped, revealing her generous cleavage. His cock suddenly stirred to life. Wishing he could jerk back the bedcovers and feast his eyes on her naked charms, he quickly rose to his feet and hurried from the room, but he’d only taken a step when a sudden thought crossed his mind. Turning around, he crept back to her door and peeked in.

She was sitting up, running her fingers through her tangled hair and looking very pleased with herself.

His instincts never failed him.

There had been no nightmare.

Shaking his head, he walked back to the lounge, and as he entered, a wicked grin curled his lips. Pouring brandy in a snifter, he plotted his revenge, then took a sip and carried it back to her room.

She’d turned on the bedside lamp, and though her puckered nipples pressing urgently against his thin cotton T-shirt were almost impossible to ignore, he managed to keep from staring.

“Here,” he said softly, sitting on the edge of the bed and handing her the glass. “This will help to calm your nerves.”

“Thanks,” she replied, then drank a little and let out a sigh. “That was so scary.”

“Of course it was, but you seem much better now. I’m sure you’ll have no trouble going back to sleep, especially after finishing that brandy.”

“But I might have another nightmare,” she said hastily. “You will stay, won’t you? Please? Just in case.”

“I’m a man of my word,” he answered, studying her feigned fear.

“Thanks, Nick. You’ve been amazing. Youareamazing. I’ve never met anyone like you.”

“You don’t know me, Bianca.”

“I know enough,” she said earnestly, taking another swallow. “This is so good.”

“It should be. It’s over a hundred bucks a bottle. My sister’s husband has expensive taste, but he can afford it.”

“What does he do?”

“A couple of different things,” Nick answered vaguely, “and everything he touches turns to gold. He’s gifted, but we’re all born with talent. I’m sure you’d be a star if you ever took up acting.”

“What makes you say that?” she remarked innocently. “I’ve never even thought about it.”

“That surprises me.”

“It does? Why?”

“That scene you just played out, it was remarkable. I almost believed you, and it takes a lot to—”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she snapped, the sweetness in her voice instantly changing to righteous indignation. “I was—”

“Putting on a show,” he shot back.

“But I—”

“You’re already in trouble,” he warned, watching her face burn beet red. “Don’t make it any worse by insulting my intelligence with a lie. What were you hoping to accomplish?”

“How did you know?” she mumbled, lowering her eyes.
