CHAPTER FIFTEEN

IT WAS ALMOST 3 P.M. Emma would be arriving for her interview at any minute. The image of her teetering towards the limo and Angelo picking her up had stayed with him throughout the day. Predictably, videos were up on the gossip websites, and photographs were plastered across the front page of the tabloids. Angelo came across as a romantic, swashbuckling hero, but Emma looked unattractive and embarrassingly wasted.

“Jerry on line three,” Martha announced through the intercom. “Are you finished with that file?”

“Not yet,” he grunted, annoyed it was taking so long, then gathering his wits, he picked up the phone.

“Hi, Jerry.”

“Zach, I know you’re meeting with Emma Hartman in a few minutes, but Kurt wants her. He claims he’s heard good things.”

“That’s weird. She hasn’t worked anywhere. How could he hear good things?”

“Not a clue, but it doesn’t matter. Give her a few minutes then send her to his office. He wants her to start right away.”

“He does? Has he met her?”

“Don’t know, don’t care. This will make her father happy. Just say hello and move her on. Don’t stir the pot.”

“There’s nothing to stir. If he wants her, it’s fine with me.”

“I like how you’re a team player, Zach. Always have been. We’ll speak later.”

“Glad it worked out. Bye, Jerry.”

Hanging up the phone, Zach paused, a frown crossing his brow as he wondered why Kurt was so hell bent on hiring her.

“Zach,” Martha said urgently, interrupting his thoughts as she entered and closed the door. “Emma Hartman is here,” she continued, hurrying across to him and leaning over his desk.

“And you’re not showing her in because...?”

“She just ordered me to get her some coffee. Didn’t ask, ordered.”

“Ah, I see, and did you?”

“It ticked me off, but of course. Actually, I almost feel sorry for her. She doesn’t look like she’s feeling the best.”

“I’m not surprised. I caught sight ot her last night after my dinner with Steven Levy. She was falling down drunk, and I mean literally.”

“I saw the pictures, but I didn’t know you were there. How did that happen?”

“My meeting was at the Homestead Steakhouse, and I was in my car about to leave when Emma and her group appeared. I watched the whole thing. The photos didn’t lie. It was absurd. I’ve never understood why people get plastered.”

“Hey, I’d happily drink too much if Angelo Frattiano was there to lift me up and carry me to his limo.”

“Anything else, or did you just want to tell me that she’s a typical Hollywood brat and keep her waiting?”

“That’s about it,” Martha said with a grin as she straightened up.

“I need to get this interview over with. Bring her in.”

“Only if you promise you won’t hire her.”

“I’m already off the hook. That’s why Jerry just called. Kurt wants her, though I don’t know why. Apparently he’s all fired up.”

“Of course he is. Haven’t you noticed how many females are on his team? And they’re all females with short skirts and expensive boob jobs. Throw in a famous father with clout and it’s a no-brainer.”

“Martha!”
